Sunday’s best of the rest at Outside Lands: Teddy Swims, Elyanna and more

Sure, Chappell Roan’s set at Outside Lands was the blockbuster hit of the summer, but Sunday’s offerings brought plenty of other fireworks. Outside of the pop phenom, the order of the day was roots, country, folk and Americana—with many of those acts on the Land’s End main stage. Throughout the rest of the festival grounds, the lineup was rounded out by electronic, hip-hop and dance acts.

Teddy Swims: Singer-songwriter Teddy Swims performed immediately following Chappell Roan. That’s either a bad thing (hard to follow!) or a good one (look at all these people sticking around!).

The artist, who’s name is Jaten Dimsdale, had to win back the polo field crowd that had dispersed in big numbers. He pulled it off, bringing people right on back with one of the highlight sets of the weekend. Singing tracks like “Apple Juice” and “Funeral,” the tattooed singer belted powerfully.

Elian Marjieh, Elyanna

He donned a San Francisco Giants jersey with his name and No. 69 on the back. He strutted across the stage with sense of joy and optimism. Playing one new track, Teddy Swims encouraged the crowd to give it a chance, but also joked to please tell him if it wasn’t very good.

Elyanna: The Palestinian-Chilean singer was the surprise of the weekend, fusing her cultural influences into a set that felt entirely fresh. Her performance included handheld drums, dancers and a flowing cloth that stretched across the Twin Peaks stage. On top of that, Elyanna’s voice soared—in Arabic—and stole the show. The songs were structured in a pop foundation with which American audiences are familiar, but it presented such an interesting twist in the presentation, mixing in so many dance and musical influences from other cultures that it made for a particularly compelling performance.

Sons of the East

Paul Cauthen: Sunday was a banner day for blues, Americana rock and country. Texas singer Paul Cauthen managed to mix all three into his midday set. With a little outlaw country attitude, Cauthen and his band ripped through blues-tinged rock and roll with a smart and punchy aesthetic. Cauthen’s deep, whiskey-soaked vocals fit in well with his Southern sound. An accomplished singer in his own right, Cauthen was also a solid guitarist, laying down bluesy and tight country rock licks.

Sons of the East: Australian folk band Sons of the East provided the ideal ease in to the final day of the festival. The young band delivered nuance and subtlety with stripped-down acoustics and songs high on harmonies. The trio is made up of Nic Johnston, Dan Wallage and Jack Rollins. They brought rootsy clap-alongs to the band’s sound with an organic energy that drew in a crowd.

Food, continued: The fry breads from Waspehpah’s Kitchen were an unexpected game changer. Offering bison, vegetarian and berry, the warm flaky dough worked like a bowl for the ingredients. The Oakland restaurant provides Native-American-inspired cuisine that was ridiculously tasty. Simply walking around the festival grounds with the item garnered questions. The abundant offerings at Wine Lands and Beer Lands remained plenty while keeping the lines short throughout most of the weekend.

No dust! The light rain likely helped with this one, but Outside Lands has trouble with dust flying around by the final day, after 150,000 attendees have trampled every square foot of the festival grounds. On Sunday, it wasn’t an issue.
