SAN FRANCISCO — Arizona DJ and producer Ghastly turned the Regency Ballroom crowd into a furious ball of energy just waiting to explode on Friday.

Bringing his “Mystifying Oracle Tour” to the Bay, Ghastly used the opportunity to showcase his debut album of the same name. His use of samples created an immersive environment, giving his drops a more memorable impact.

“I spent the last year writing this through some of my happiest and darkest times and put every bit of those emotions into each song,” the DJ said between cuts Friday. “I hope it helps you the way it helped me.”

Ghastly is one of the prominent figures in the current EDM scene, playing a kind of highly melodic electronica, with 8-bit, video-game-like flourishes. The songs he performed were a nice blend of modern sound and analog touches. Throughout the performance, only his face was  illuminated, creating a sort of spooky atmosphere.

Dutch DJ and producer Dion Timmer preceded Ghastly by mixing some Mac Demarco with high-pitched beats. Throughout his set, he also took more melodic beats and combined those with Cardi B’s “Yellow Bodak.” Combining EDM with contemporary hip-hop, as well as past dubstep cuts with EDM hits, is all the rage right now. Timmer’s sound was much more melodic line and less dense. It was a more house-influenced take on EDM and not as much based around giant buildups and drops.

L.A. DJ Kompany played cuts off his Never Say Die EP, in addition to some of his collaborations with other producers. His set was much darker than any of the others on Friday, with tones that were more musically charged to the bass than to melodic high-pitched lines. This created a blend of very dense dubstep. His highlights included a mix of Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble,” Skrillex cuts and some Eurodance icons like the Vengaboys.

Swage opened the show with energetic EDM and dubstep. Psychedelic projections accompanied a blend of Skrillex, rock and hip-hop. One of the highlights of his set was a mix of  Third Eye Blind’s “Semi-Charmed Life” and Dr. Dre’s “The Next Episode.”
