SLIDESHOW: Within Temptation, In Flames and Smash Into Pieces at the Warfield

SAN FRANCISCO — Dutch goth-metal rockers Within Temptation, Swedish melo-death titans In Flames and heavy alternative Swedes Smashed Into Pieces brought a three-pronged attack of infectious heaviness to the Warfield on Monday night.

All three acts sport an affinity for working poppy melodies into an aggressive context. Headliners Within Temptation are no stranger to incorporating an accessible atmosphere into their chunky riffs, but In Flames retain some of its underground death metal roots. Elements of the Gothenburg sound they helped define crop up the latter band’s songs, but their recent affinity for sticky choruses fit much better next to the operatic passion of Within Temptation.

Openers Smashed Into Pieces are more of an alt-rock band than metal. This isn’t to say these guys don’t have loud riffs or hard-hitting beats, but they feed that fire fed through the filter of stadium-ready bands like Imagine Dragons. They retain the catchiness, while beefing it up a bit for a more mosh-worthy sound.
