U2’s Bono turns 60, shares playlist of the 60 songs that ‘saved my life’

U2 frontman Bono, who turned 60 on May 10, shared a playlist of 60 songs that have impacted his life.

“These are some of the songs that save my life, the ones I couldn’t have lived without, the ones that got me from there to here, zero to 60 through all the scrapes, all manner of nuisance from the serious to the silly; and the joy—mostly joy,” he wrote in a letter to fans on U2.com.

He said he’d be writing a letter on the way in which of the 60 songs has affected him.

The list includes luminaries like Luciano Pavarotti, the Sex Pistols and David Bowie to younger artists like Billie Eilish, Adele and Kanye West

Additionally, Bono has begun writing fan letters to each artist on the list—or his or her surviving relatives—to thank them.

“I step inside your song and it’s a black beauty, achingly awesomely vulnerable and terrifying, fearliess and worrisome … but you are not worried by all that,” he wrote to Eillish and her brother, Finneas.

To the members of Kraftwerk, who lost cofounder Florian Schneider this week, he recounted how “The Man Machine stole his heart and mind as a teenager. “I gave [wife] Ali [Hewson] a copy to romance her on her 17th birthday in 1978… “Neon Lights” is a song that brought into being a future that has now become so familiar, it is easy to forget just how strange it was.”

The playlist is available on Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music and Amazon.
