StubHub and Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation have gifted recorders to 4,300 San Francisco Unified School District fourth graders, spread across 72 schools in the district.

The donations, part of StubHub’s commitment to putting more than $3 million in music instruments into public school music programs, will enable the district’s entire forth grade class to participate in music classes at home. The instruments’ combined value is $20,000.

The school district has continued to offer its students an arts education, even through remote learning, SFUSD Superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews said.

“The district is strengthening its partnerships with Bay Area arts partners that continue to support students’ arts experiences through distance learning and artist residencies,” he said in a news release.

Since 2018, StubHub has funded about $5 million in instruments. Selected school districts are chosen collaboratively between Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation and StubHub. Interested schools may apply directly through MHOF.

The foundation was inspired by the film “Mr. Holland’s Opus,” the story of the profound effect a dedicated music teacher had on generations of students. It donates musical instruments to underfunded music programs and provides services to school districts nationwide, giving economically disadvantaged youth access to a music education.
