Insert Foot: Who holds the title of most un-rock rock star on the planet?

You know how sometimes you can’t unsee something, no matter how violently your eyes leap back into your brain, screaming?

I just witnessed a clip of something from 1976 featuring John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, posing as CHP officers, pulling Brian Wilson from bed and forcing him to surf because not surfing was against California law in 1976.

Rendering: Adam Pardee/STAFF.

Stunningly … not their best work. Any of them.

It certainly wasn’t indicative of how police really wake someone in their own bedroom (just trust me). I suspect it was 1976’s version of a new fangled “video” for “Surfin’ USA,” and it was predictably uncomfortable, not just because of the massive comedic swing and miss (“Two Broke Girls”-level unfunny). Just watching 1976 Brian Wilson walking into a real ocean is like waking up one morning to find your daughter’s boyfriend in your kitchen (trust me, not comfortable for anyone).

The experience wasn’t dissimilar to watching the old “Faces of Death” movies, a party fave from the 1980s for stupid guys (me, friends) demonstrating how brave and cool we were watching a guy’s parachute not open. Though, in retrospect, it actually was kind of fascinating to see how high he bounced … but overall a gross experience I wouldn’t recommend.

Wilson, of course, didn’t die (but he did kind of bounce when the ocean coughed him back onto the beach).

But then the video’s terror level really escalated.

Mike Love became involved.

The scene cut to a mid-’70s Beach Boys concert … with Love dancing … and … make it STOP.

At least the video still meant well up until then. What a strange juxtaposition. There was the late Dennis Wilson–maybe the coolest-looking guy ever pretending to play drums, and his very lovable brother, the late Carl Wilson, playing guitar, not far from the civilized Al Jardine, and a couple other mellow-looking guys in Hawaiian shirts.

And right dab in the center of it all was Mike Love, looking typically smug, having some sort of awful seizure while trying to impersonate Mick Jagger.

Look, when I decide to impose myself onto a dance floor somewhere, people surround me with cameras for children’s tutorials on how not to behave at someone else’s wedding. I’m the last guy to make fun of someone else throwing a fit to music.

But my issue with this video is the issue with anything that’s ever been wrong with the otherwise fantastically pleasant Beach Boys: Mike Love.

I started wondering if there’s a worse human being in rock music history who hasn’t actually killed someone, besides Marilyn Manson. And not just because Mike Love approaches dancing like a deeply rooted palm tree approaches a hurricane.

Not to get too detailed, but Love has always had a certain entitled, misplaced arrogance about the Beach Boys, despite Brian Wilson being the genius who gave Love a career. Cousin Mike went great lengths to possess the Beach Boys name, lends it to various conservative causes that don’t thrill fans, and seems like an all-around bully. Especially to Wilson who, of course, has a long history of various mental health issues.

I won’t go to into all the details, because I don’t get paid by the word (or at all, really). For our purpose, let’s just take one of his most severe crimes: being the least rock and roll guy in rock and roll.

Is there a less rock and roll guy than Mike Love? This is where I was going to put to the list, use it as an excuse to make fun of a few people, and be on my way … but, seriously, no one comes to mind. Not even close.

I tried to think up some prog rockers–which isn’t very rock and roll at all–but at least they wear capes and have lasers. Steve Perry would be a candidate, but those vocal chords let him get away with anything … Dennis DeYoung? Rob Thomas? He seems like he takes a lot showers. Pat Boone was the least rock and roll human of his time, but at least he seemed nice. Ozzy says nice things about him.

Mike Love isn’t just not rock … he’s actually in the red, like the anti-rock. He’s in rock debt and should spend his next life wearing golf pants and selling hairpieces. If anyone has other suggestions for the job of the most unrock rock star ever, find me on social media below. I don’t think it can be done.

How original. An article bashing Mike Love. Uninspired and devoid of worthwhile facts. Love has been bashed so often and frequently its like writing an article about the smell of farts. You might as well get into collecting beanie babies. You've come to the end of your useful life as a writer. Dollar Tree is hiring. Peace be with you.

Tony the tigress, It's no wonder you are not paid to write. Everyone's entitled to their opinion but you are judging a person you have never met and don't know the first thing about. On the other hand, I have been Mike's friend for nearly 50 years; a friendship that continues to this day. You have NO idea of the BS Mike had to endure from his cousins. Brian has also been a genuine friend for years, Carl was the nicest man I've ever known and Dennis was a soulmate. That said, all of them had serious substance abuse and other issues that Mike, sober and dedicated to maintaining the band's existence, had to deal with. Yes, he can be irascible. Yes, he F'd up epically at the Hall of Fame event. But he is a good father, has been a supportive husband for 25 years and, at 80 years young, he performs more than 170 shows every non-Covid year. He is a talented, driven, imperfect human being. He is also the reason The Beach Boys have toured the world continuously for 60 years and counting. You considered none of this in your superficial and worthless waste of words. How wonderfully appropriate that your unknown band was named Nag, Nag, Nag. Nagging about the writer of Good Vibrations and a catalog of legendary songs just comes off as misplaced envy. Maybe consider writing to the beat of a different drummer. One we've actually heard of.

I agree. I saw them in the 80's just before Dennis died and saw them about ten years later in the 90's with my husband and kids. They have been my summer jam since my childhood in the 60's. Mike has had his moments, but anyone who keeps the schedules they have had to keep, doing two shows a night many nights at fairs, jumping on the bus to do 2 more shows tomorrow night with strained voices and fighting off old age and family separation, that has to suck. They could easily chuck it all and retire instead putting up with all this abuse. They've been at it for 60 years!

Since none of you were writing, singing and touring playing great music, since 1961, I say shut the f up. I Saw the Beach Boys last Saturday, Mike Love can still entertain. I had a great time and it Appeared that Mr. Love was also having a good time.

God only knows? Forever? Disney Girls? Cotton fields? Lady Lynda? What's the common denominator? No Mike Love nasal singing.

Brian Wilson's songs "boring"...? You mean songs such as "The Warmth Of The Sun", "The Lonely Sea", "Let Him Run Wild", "She Knows Me Too Well", "Caroline, No", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "God Only Knows", "California Girls"...?

I have been to BB concerts since 1963. I saw them again Friday 10/3/2021 in Columbia SC. My family was invited backstage after the show. I talk to Mike Love, Bruce Johnson, and others in the band. A great group. Very outgoing. Good conversation and they treated my family as special guests. They played a 2 1/2 hour show and took their time to chat with us. We talk about many issues in the world today. These guys are no different from you or me. I am glad they are still touring. Your article is very wrong. See the Smiles on the face of the people leaving the show. That is what the world needs right now.

Mike Love is the guy that kept the band together all these years while some of the others were soaking their brains in drugs and alcohol. Yes he looks like an awkward dad dancing on stage even when he was young but his vocals especially in the early BB songs are iconic and have the classic California teenager sound that made them so great. And if I am not mistaken he wrote a lot of those great early hits. He also goes unrecognized for his bass vocals in many of the tunes. We saw the BB in concert this last September and Mike put on a great show for over two hours. That's pretty impressive for a guy in his 70s. His son was also a great vocalist and guitar player. They brought joy and happiness for a couple of hours for an audience that sincerely needed that after the last year and a half we have been through. Your article might as well just been another screed in the YouTube comments section. Try write something a little more original next time.

Mike Love pushed Bryan out and he had a mental breakdown! He's a Bully, it wasn't his band, he was just a cousin and they invited him to join and he wanted it for himself!

Listen , I am the guy who bought Mike Love's Solo album, so U got a right to speak here. Yes he can be an ass, yes he cant handle that other people write with and control Brian ( thats actually a biggie), and, his lyrics never really grew out of his patented " hook and formula". He also has killed some decent BB songs by re-recording them recently. However his vocals quite frankly are part of the soundtrack to the 60s, he has kept the brand name going, and has been a strong front man for the group. He has put up with more crap internally, probably more than he caused and he has been doing it for 60 years, so he probably has earned better from a " salad bar" drummer/writer. And by the way if you watch on YouTube the video the writer is talking about Mike Love was working it for the crowd pretty darn good.

Surely you can find something else to write about than Mike Love. Yes, we all know about the issues the Beach Boys had. The main problem was, that Love wanted to go in a commercial direction, and Brian didn't. Big deal. Bands go through this all the time. You should be well aware of this from being in a band yourself. Get over it. Get a life.

I can’t get enough Mike Love bashing. Keep up the good work. Has no one ever told Love how stupid he looks trying to dance? He’ll do anything to try to steal the limelight. His personality is as bad as his dancing. I just wish I could unsee him…

    1. Buck Janson

I have to agree that Mike Love's obvious and awkward attempts to be the face of the Beach Boys are unwelcome, unseemly and embarrassing. His cringeworthy impersonation of Mick Jagger in the video is as you say, best unseen. Love is much better listened to than watched. All that said, there would be no Beach Boys without him.
