The Velveteers, Good Morning, Greer, The F16s, Jackson+Sellers, Aubrie Sellers, Jade Jackson, Rêve

Clockwise from top left: The Velveteers, Good Morning, Greer, The F16s, Jackson+Sellers and Rêve.

The sonic explorations of Indian alt-pop band The F16s, quiet climate change protest of Good Morning, a lullaby by Jackson+Sellers, self-reflection of Greer, a moody number by The Velveteers and ’90s club banger by Rêve make up our favorite new songs of the week.

The F16s, “Easy Bake Easy Wake” — The F16s are an alt-pop band from the southeast coast of India, in Chennai. This is the second single from their forthcoming EP, Is It Time To Eat The Rich Yet? The track is about the never-ending cycle of rejection and adoration that comes with fame. Even with a theme that not everyone can relate to, the F16s lyrically relate this to the ups and downs of a relationship, which makes it more accessible. Sonically, the group is experimenting a little more with its sound. The synths are reminiscent of bedroom pop, which it combines with horns throughout the chorus.

Good Morning, “Burning” — Melbourne duo Good Morning’s track “Burning” captures the sense of dread it was feeling about the Australian wildfires of 2020. Musically, it’s so chill that it may distract you from from that dread. It’s clear how frustrated Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons are about the status quo of how the climate crisis is being handled in their home country.

Jackson+Sellers, “Hush” — Jade Jackson and Aubrie Sellers have joined forces and are working toward their collaborative album. Their latest track, “Hush,” is a warning about bad love, offering up more twangy folk. The song invokes the lullaby “Hush, Little Baby,” which is probably why it has such a comforting feeling to it.

Greer, “Happy People” — “Happy People” follows the process of self-reflection and trying to grow out of being bitter and angry about something. Greer stays true to its alt-rock sound while showing a more vulnerable side of the group.

The Velveteers, “Brightest Light” — This song has a haunting feeling with the way the vocals are layered, especially toward the end. On the bridge, the band shifts from lighter acoustic guitar strumming of the verses, changes tempo, throws in some minor-key electric guitar chords and adds a darker edge. Thematically, the track is about going through the ups and downs of life. It adds a more nuanced side to this band.

Rêve, “CTRL + ALT + DEL” — Rêve’s latest is the perfect end-of-summer anthem with its ’90s-club-music-inspired sound, with synths, looping patterns and pulsing drumming. The lyrics are on par with the “hot girl summer” mindset. It encourages listeners to do what makes them happy instead of wasting time on people who don’t deserve them.

Aarushi’s Pick: This week’s favorite is “Easy Bake Easy Wake” by The F16s. It perfectly captures the turning of summer to fall. This is the time of year I switch to listening to mellower music and this fits the bill. It’s a versatile song, fitting in in coffee shops and parties. I’ve been following The F16s for a few years and I’m excited for their upcoming projects.
