The San Francisco Symphony will officially kick off its new season with three concerts featuring new Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen in his inaugural opening night appearance, symphony collaborative partner Esperanza Spalding, dancers from the City’s LINES Ballet performing original choreography by Alonzo King, and a jazz trio of surprise musicians.
The official “Re-Opening Night” concert will take place on Friday at Davies Symphony Hall. It will be preceded Thursday by the annual All San Francisco Concert for members of San Francisco service organizations and will be followed by another show on Oct. 2.
All three concerts will include the same program, including John Adams’ “Slonimsky’s Earbox,” Alberto Ginastera’s “Estancia Suite” with the LINES Ballet, Silvestre Revueltas’ “Noche de encantamiento” from his film score to “La noche de los Mayas,” and Esperanza Spalding and the surprise jazz trio performing Wayne Shorter’s “Gaia” with the symphony.
The Re-Opening Night concert will be filmed for PBS’ “Great Performances” series, which will air on Nov. 19 at 9 p.m. Prior to the event, all attendees are invited to a complimentary sparkling wine welcome in lobby. After the concert there will be an outdoor after-party at the corner of Grove & Franklin streets with live music by DJL! and others. Proceeds from the concert will go toward San Francisco Symphony’s artistic, education and community programs. VIP packages are still available and include an invitation to a reception with Esa-Pekka Salonen, musicians and guest artists. General tickets to the performance are available here. Tickets to the Oct. 2 performance range from $35 to $200 and are also available on the symphony’s website.
The Sept. 30 All Francisco Concert will include the presentation of the Ellen Magnin Newman Award to honor an outstanding community-based arts organization. The 2021 recipient is Loco Bloco, which helps San Francisco youth in the creation and performance of music, dance and theater rooted in Afro-Latino traditions.
The symphony returned to Davies Symphony Hall with in-person performances last spring.
To attend concerts, ticket-holders 12 and older must show proof of full vaccination, and children 11 and younger must have proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours or antigen (rapid) test within 24 hours of the event. All attendees must also wear a facial covering inside the concert hall.
