Outside Lands: Maggie Rogers offers a beacon of light in the fog
SAN FRANCISCO — It was a little windy, a bit chilly and a lot foggy—but none of that mattered when singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers hit the Land’s End Stage on Saturday evening. The Maryland-born musician delivered a shining performance from beginning to end; one of the highlights of the festival’s second day.
Rogers, who’s played Outside Lands once before, in 2017, referenced the very San Francisco weather midway through her set as heavy sheets of view-obscuring fog blew across the polo field.
“This next song is about the summer, even if it feels like the middle of fall,” she said.
Rogers was energetic, engaging and vocally flawless through her dozen or so songs. Opening with “Overdrive” and “Give a Little,” she sang clearly with just the slightest rasp for good measure. Half of the songs came from 2022 album Surrender, the other from her debut, Heard It In a Past Life.
Charging through “Want Want,” “Shatter” and “Love You for a Long Time,” she kept the pace moving, attacking the stage from side to side and bouncing up and down, the crowd bouncing and singing along.
“That song makes me feel like a god-damn pop star,” she said.
Her stellar band added lush backing harmonies that elevated each song. Mixing in tracks like “Anywhere With You,” “Be Cool” and “Alaska,” Rogers indeed kept it cool. During “Retrograde,” she even got the crowd singing along with a short, poppy rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me).” The guitars were turned up louder while the song kept its singalong quality.
Rogers closed out her set with the trio of “Fallingwater,” the euphoric “Light On” and “That’s Where I Am,” before saying a quick thank you and making her way off stage.
