Quick Takes: Franz Ferdinand, ‘Right Thoughts Right Words Right Action’

Franz Ferdinand, Alex Kapranos, Nick McCarthy

Franz Ferdinand have never seemed to care about popularity and record sales. That they achieved it with their debut album was an added bonus. All they’ve wanted to do was make the music they like, visit the places they wanted to visit, and have arts-influenced lives outside of the band.

Their next three albums, including the new Right Thoughts Right Words Right Actions (out Aug. 27), follow the same pattern. There’s just not much variation to the kind of music they make. That’s fine with them, and that’s fine to their fans.

There’s 10 tracks on the basic version of RTRWRA. The first and third are “Right Action” and “Love Illumination,” which everyone has already heard. The second, “Evil Eye,” begins with a scream that will wake you up if you’re drowsy. The fourth, “Stand On The Horizon,” is the strongest one of the bunch, while the last, “Goodbye Lovers and Friends,” is the most original. The remainder are songs about swingers (“Brief Encounters”) and overripe fruit (?) (“Fresh Strawberries”).

These songs sound like Franz Ferdinand. Got a problem with that?

Grade: B

Listen: “Stand On The Horizon.”
