Quick Takes: The Rubens, ‘The Rubens’

The Rubens

This debut album could be subtitled, “’70s rock-influenced sounds from Australia.” Many in the U.S. are about to find out about the Rubens, a band that includes three brothers, as they open for Grouplove across the country. The story goes like this: They completed a demo and gave it to a friend. The friend happened across Grammy-winning producer David Kahne, who has worked with Paul McCartney, the Strokes and Regina Spektor, among others. Kahne took them on soon after, and helped seal a label deal with Warner Brothers. The debut album will be released Sept. 10.

The ’70s rock influence makes sense, given that that Sam, Elliot and Zaac Margin, the three brothers in the band (which includes Scott Baldwin and William Zeglis) were raised on Van Morrison, Fleetwood Mac, Tracy Chapman and Led Zeppelin. The material here is interesting, and there are some symphonic elements to some of the songs. Kahne’s additions, perhaps? There’s also the prerequisite soul organ and Motown flourishes. It’s not particularly original, but the album should get some play from fans of blues rock, Southern rock and classic rock.
