The album, coming in October, refers to singer-songwriter Brooke Alexx Greenberg’s best qualities, her infectious smile and her ability to speak her mind unapologetically.

“Growing up, people have always mentioned that my mouth is physically larger and I have this giant smile that people notice and compliment me on,” she said in a recent video call. “BIG MOUTH is a metaphor for gossiping and spilling tea, and thats what songwriting and storytelling is. It’s very ‘me’ because … it also plays on the notion of using your mouth to sing.”

On the 11-track album, the 29-year-old delves into her experiences with love: breaking up with her first boyfriend, throwing herself into music and growing her career, first in New Jersey and then Nashville; though she considered moving to L.A. as well, at first. BIG MOUTH is a pop album that leans into alt-rock, with ’90s and 2000s pop-punk influences.

“It explores everything about my life, dating younger guys then breaking up with them on vacation,” she said, laughing.

Lyricism and storytelling are the heart of Brooke Alexx’s music. Being surrounded by musical energy in Nashville helped her polish her skills and create pop music that matters, she said, citing Taylor Swift, Sheryl Crow and Maisie Peters as songwriting influences. Notably, all three are terrific at writing about their relationships.

Her latest single, “Younger Guys” is a summer track about many of her aforementioned relationships with younger men, which she swore are completely coincidental.

“I feel like it is taboo in society for women to date men who are younger than them but there is this movement right now where women who are older and super independent; who have their stuff together and giving boss energy, are enjoying men who are a little free and exciting and younger,” she said.

The idea of letting go and allowing herself to live on her terms is a recurring theme in Brooke Alexx’s music and she explored this on songs like “Older” and “Seriously.” Being the oldest of three sisters, she said it’s been both a privilege and a curse. She was expected to have life figured out with no room for mistakes, and become the moral guide for her siblings. She said she’s also been told she takes things too seriously, an wanted to unpack these ideas on BIG MOUTH.

At 7, Greenberg knew music was her passion.

“Everyone in my family can sing but nobody ever pursued it or knew which path to take,” she said, adding that he parents supported her anyway and pushed her to the success she’s reached so far. Her mom took her to auditions and signed her up for musical theater. “I believed it was the only outlet for singing.”

Then she discovered Taylor Swift at 13, and realized she could be a songwriter, too.

“This changed everything!” she said. “I started playing guitar and went to study music at Elon University in North Carolina.”

During her seven years in Nashville, she honed her craft and found herself as an artist, realizing the kind of music she wanted to make. She released numerous singles, including the viral “All My Exes’ Moms,” and EPs.

“I was writing a bunch of songs that I really loved and felt in my heart that it is time to make a bigger project. I am ready for it,” she said.

As an independent artist, she enjoys the creative control of working at her own pace and having control of her music.

“I’m very Type A, and I like to have my hands on everything I do,” she said. “I edit and direct my music videos, I make my own social content, I create the cover art and … I choose the dates of release. I love that I’m using all these creative sides of my brain that I have been blessed with.”
