Tuesday Tracks: Your Weekly New Music Discovery – Sept. 25
Every week, there’s a plethora of new music at our fingertips.
Artists on platforms such as Spotify and Bandcamp are plentiful, and the radio offers a steady deluge of new singles, but who has time to sort through all that? RIFF does!
We pooled our resources to find some of the best new singles from all genres and backgrounds, so you can find your newest earworm without all the drama. Enjoy this week’s hidden gems:

Love Jerks, “Doing It Our Way” – The quirky duo of Bryan Garza and Rebecca Garza-Bortman have produced a song that reflects their married life. Both singers were the leaders of other groups, but now embark on their own musical and matrimonial journey. “Doing It Our Way” endearingly describes their relationship, even breaking halfway in to reenact the pastor’s uniting words at the altar: “By the power invested in me by the state of California and the internet, I now pronounce you husband and wife! Kiss the bride!” This song combines the Beatles’ psychedelic side and the spirit of a Jon Hughes film, vibrantly comical and resounding in talent.

Alextbh, “Still Mine” – Malaysian artist Alextbh is unafraid to champion his identity. He wants “Still Mine” to push for the narrative that everyone experiences heartbreak, regardless of his or her sexual orientation. The LGBTQ community is typically frowned upon in Malaysia and the government outspokenly addresses this with no qualms. That makes Alextbh a brave pioneer. Regardless of pressures to conform, “Still Mine” provides relevant analysis of the obsessive tendencies of a broken heart. Its lush R&B and pop sounds finds their footing on powerful falsetto singing and a groovy bass lines, painting a vivid and relatable story for everyone.

NVDES, “Mind Body Soul Music” – This single from NVDES’ upcoming album Vibe City Utah is visionary in the truest sense. A mix of electronic dance music and modern gospel, NVDES uses the most exciting elements of both styles. In the video for “Mind Body Soul Music,” the protagonist embodying the eccentricities of ‘90s fashion with his canary yellow tracksuit dances like no one’s watching.

Matthew Dear, featuring Tegan and Sara, “Horses” – This song was inspired by a photographic art piece in New York depicting two horses affectionately biting each other’s mane. Dear and his wife felt connected to the horses, “Majestic animals, fitting our definition of love.” “Horses” has an intrinsic uniqueness to it, whether it’s in Dear’s Auto-Tuned baritone or the ever-evolving art-pop aura. At the 90-second mark, echoing synths and rattling hi-hats culminate in the beautiful feature from Tegan and Sara, topping off the atmosphere Dear had already arranged.

E^ST, “Alien” – Australian siren Melisa Bester has a compelling blend of romantic pop and feminine ambition and self-awareness. “Alien” is a song about not fitting in; when the simplest actions generate an innate feeling of lonely alienation. Bester, who records and performs as E^ST, hopes that this tune can serve a positive purpose in addressing solitary sentiments and uniting dispossessed people in a community. Her dreamy pop embraces the complicated transition from teen to adult.

Vic’s Pick: This week, it was exceedingly hard to choose a favorite. Each of these songs landed in my personal playlist. A bit of favoritism won the day for “Mind Body Soul Music” by NVDES. From the over-the-top volume to the edgy vocal stylings, its a truly eclectic musing. Paired with such a stupendously fun music video, its too enticing to ignore.
