Tuesday Tracks: Your Weekly New Music Discovery – Oct. 26

All We Are, French for Rabbits, BAIRD, Neal Francis, Hope Tala, Anjimile

Clockwise from top left: All We Are, French for Rabbits, BAIRD, Neal Francis, Hope Tala and Anjimile.

The contagious sincerity of Anjimile, quiet emotional cataclysm of French for Rabbits, Baird’s effortless cool, Hope Tala’s entrancing vocals, smooth funk accents of Neal Francis and All We Are’s indelible pop melodies make up our favorite tracks of the week.

Anjimile, “Stranger” — The horn section on the last leg of “Stranger” rings triumphant as Anjimile tries to extricate an identity amid change. The song addresses the difficulty of letting go of all things, good and bad, making good on an artist’s unspoken promise to lace nuance into his work. Our very online lives are often lacking in this department; all the more reason to give “Stranger” a shot.

French for Rabbits, “Walk the Desert” — Indie pop outfit French for Rabbits argues that there are no feelings too big or too small if you’re on the brink of tears: the most minute stimulus can then send you over the edge. Meanwhile, frontwoman Brooke Singer captures listeners’ attention with incredible ease. So much so that it becomes hard not losing track of just how long you’ve been staring at the wall.

Baird, “Easy On Them Turns” — Perhaps best known for his production credits on BROCKHAMPTON’s and his friends’ projects, Baird is back with a solo track that is on par with some of his best past collaborations. Here, the melodies are as catchy as the production is sharp. And don’t be fooled by Baird’s air of nonchalance. From the bouncy beat to the vocal performance, little was left up to chance. PS: Look up upcoming shows in your area and grab tickets while they’re hot–and don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Hope Tala, “Tiptoeing” — “There’s a moral to the story but I don’t know it,” Hope Tala sings on new track “Tiptoeing.” The hot commodity that is relatability is not even the song’s biggest selling point. The melodic through-line and Hope Tala’s entrancing vocals are the real reasons why you should add “Tiptoeing” to your “on repeat” playlist of the day and let it play.

Neal Francis, “Prometheus” — Nothing quite like a good ol’ funky throwback every once in a while. Neal Francis has got us covered. The only thing better than this in the same vein is probably experiencing the track live—which you can do this Sunday at Outside Lands.

All We Are, “Eden” — Experimental-leaning pop is truly having its heyday with so many bands breaking onto a scene still far from saturated. All We Are picks up the baton and hits the ground running on “Eden,” a smooth ride of an indie pop song engineered to carve out a hole in your brain and take up residence in there. Oh, so you think you can listen to “Eden” without having the song play in your head all day? Well, go ahead, I dare you…

Red’s Pick: This week’s highlight is Baird’s “Easy On Them Turns.” Turning something as anodyne as a real-life harmless bike accident into a full-on artistic exploration of our tendency to run full steam ahead isn’t within just anybody’s reach. Doing so with an incredibly catchy chorus and one of the year’s grooviest beats makes the feat all the more impressive.
