For those suffering withdrawals from last weekend’s Portola Festival in San Francisco, this week’s Tuesday Tracks brings some relief. You’ll find a solid dose of dance music from Bob Moses, Cosmo’s Midnight and Elkka to keep you moving. Tracks from Paledusk, Last Dinosaurs, Raiche and Skaiwater and Tana bring some unexpected treats along the way.
Bob Moses, “Round & Round” — This cool, mid-tempo dance number with solid vocals and a throbbing beat that will bring back fond memories of the summer festival season. Vancouver, B.C. duo Bob Moses flexes its skills in production and sound design. Pop vocals meld seamlessly with bright synths and a house music beat in this catchy banger. The Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance are currently opening for ODESZA.
Last Dinosaurs, “Walking on Ice” — This one comes on strong with melancholic rock and a ton of echoing, reverb-laden vocals. It kicks off uniquely; with the chorus, drawing you into the catchy refrain.
“Walking on ice/ Never think twice/ I’m ready to self-destruct,” Sean Caskey sings, downtrodden. The lyrics are relatable to people living on the edge. The style is reminiscent of ’90s coffeehouse rock, bringing a retro feel to the song. The group’s next album, titled RYU, is due out Nov. 10. Last Dinosaurs play at the Warfield on Nov 6.
Elkka, “Babe” — Bringing back the house music, this pure dance track brings back the feel of dancing for hours in the club. The hypnotic hook is repeated over and over in a feminine vocal on the bright intro before breaking down in a muted, thumping beat punctuated by sampled voices. As soon as the energy is depleted, Elkka (who played Portola in 2022) pulls it right back for a pulsating finale.
Paledusk featuring Masato (of Coldrain), “RUMBLE” — There’s no way you can listen to this song and be unaffected. Chaotic to the point of sick genius, this quixotic mashup of punk, hard rock and metal, it’s really out there. Get yourself ready before you listen to this one. You’ll end up in a nice cozy place at the end, but it’s a hell of a ride! This Japanese metal band, which calls its music “hyper-futuristic pop metal,” is about to play int he U.S. for the first time. The trio is on Polaris’ tour in October.
Skaiwater and Tana, “good things 2” — Emerging singer-rapper Skaiwater and Tana work together on this track to meld hip-hop with dance in a track loaded with bass and a sturdy beat. The hypnotic beat draws your attention quickly and the slick lyrics flexing fast cash and a party lifestyle are paired well with the syncopated delivery of the lyricists. In addition to releasing their own new music, Skaiwater has produced for the likes of Pinkpantheress and Lil Nas X.
Cosmo’s Midnight featuring Shungudzo, “Gimme Some More” — Bright starry synth effects draw you into this mid-tempo dance tune. Then, all of the sudden, the warm, husky vocals of Shungudzo bring in a unique dynamic. Cosmo’s Midnight (twin brothers Cosmo and Patrick Liney) layers in several recognizable dance song samples, especially Kylie Minogue’s “Love At First Sight,” into this bright, poppy tune, creating something new while adding in a sense of familiarity.
Raiche, “Late Show” — The silky vocals by New England native Raiche are smooth yet bright. Slightly more uptempo than a ballad, this track has ballad-esque qualities. Woozy synth tones are paired with a hip-hop rhythm as Raiche’s voice sails over the beat. Her sound is a mix of Kali Uchis and Ari Lennox, with a similar cadence and punch. “Late Show” is her second single of the year.
Mel’s pick: Raiche’s lush lyrical delivery on this cool, downtempo hip-hop track are the ultimate blend for warming up on hopefully upcoming chilly nights.
