This week brings lo-fi rock from Wishy, alt-rock by Anxious, pop from John Splithoff, dance music by Lawrence Hart, funk and soul from New Orleanians Irma Thomas and Galactic, and a country tune by Carter Faith.
Anxious, “Never Said” — This alt-rock single from Anxious’s new album, Bambi, is a sliver of what the LP is about. The song takes you back to your emo phase. “I’ve given up all of my time for you, and now I find that I need to let go,” vocalist Grady Allen screams. If this type of music resonates with you, you’ll find the lyrics unforgettable. Anxious will be touring across the U.S. this spring, playing at Brick & Mortar Music Hall in San Francisco on March 25.

Wishy, “Fly” — Wishy has created a melodic song that brings out a dream-pop vibe to its lo-fi rock sound. The song captures the idea of love and life, all in one. The lyrics, delivered in unison by singer-guitarist Kevin Krauter and Nina Pitchkites, show a sense of gratitude to the present. Wishy will be opening for Momma in May to promote their upcoming EP and will be stopping at San Francisco’s August Hall on May 10.
John Splithoff, “Plateau” — Chicago native John Splithoff has created a soulful and catchy track that captures a perfect blend of piano, Western elements and strong lyricism. This song fills a sense of longing with its soothing melody, with all of the words complementing the emotion Splithoff creates. The artist is touring this spring, including a gig at The Independent in San Francisco on May 2.

Lawrence Hart, “Love U Bring” — U.K.-based DJ and producer Lawrence Hart released this track ahead of his forthcoming debut album, Come In Out of the Rain. Hart creates a beat that’s accompanied by a high-pitched vocal track, which creates a snappy rhythm. This upbeat track will have everyone moving on the dance floor. The album is due out April 4 via Double Six Records.
Galactic and Irma Thomas, “Where I Belong” — Irma Thomas is known as the Soul Queen of New Orleans. She came up around the same time as Etta James. But it wasn’t until this century, 2007, that she won a Grammy, in the Best Contemporary Blues category for After the Rain. She joins up with New Orleans funk band Galactic for a track that nods to the sound of their home. The lyrics provide motivation to make it through tough days. Thomas’ soulful voice rides the waves created by the brassy party music arrangement.

Carter Faith, “If I Had Never Lost My Mind…” — This soothing yet powerful ballad ruminates about what-ifs. Over a gorgeous melody, North-Carolina-raised, Nashville-based artist Carter Faith lays out what can go on in the mind of someone mulling over the past. The artist has shared stages with the likes of Willie Nelson and Little Big Town, and has gotten the attention of Nashville’s music press. Now, she’s about to support Ella Langley and Carly Pearce on tour.
Kiren’s pick: When I first listened to “Fly,” I was immediately hit with nostalgia. I believe there’s a lot of potential in the talent of Wishy.
