66th Grammy Awards: Top storylines and how to watch
To some the Grammy Awards are the most anticipated night in music. There’s a lot to take in, from the performances, the winners, the fashion and the celebration of a year in music. Others deride the Recording Academy honors; for them, it’s an annual reminder of the frustrations of voters who are out of touch with what’s happening in the music industry.
This year, many eyes will likely be on a trio of female pop acts taking the stage to perform: Dua Lipa, Billie Ellish and Olivia Rodrigo.
Other announced performances at the 66th annual Grammy Awards include U2 in the first televised performance from Sphere in Las Vegas, performing a song the band wrote in honor of that city, as well as Billie Joel, Luke Combs, Joni Mitchell, Travis Scott and Burna Boy. The latter will be the first Afro-fusion artist to perform during the televised portion of the Grammys. Speaking of which, the award show has expanded its categories to cover the continent of Africa with a new category: Best African Performance, which will be announced during the live-streamed pre-cast ceremony earlier in the day. Two other new categories are Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording.
Rapper SZA leads the way in nominations with nine. Indie rock and pop star Phoebe Bridgers and neo-soul artist Victoria Monét have seven nominations each. They’re followed by Bridgers’ band boygenius, Jon Batiste, Brandy Clark, Miley Cyrus, Eilish, Rodrigo and Taylor Swift, each with six nominations. Jack Antonoff and Canadian producer Serban Ghenea are the most-nominated pop producers this year.
The Grammys’ most prestigious awards—Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Record of the Year—seem to be a wide open race in 2024.
Comedian and former “Daily Show” host Trevor Noah will return to host the main ceremony.
Songwriter-producer Justin Tranter will host the Premiere Ceremony, which will begin with an opening number by J. Ivy, Larkin Poe, Pentatonix, Sheila E. and Jordin Sparks; and include performances by Brandy Clark, Robert Glasper, Laufey, Terrace Martin and others. Presenters include Natalia Lafourcade, Rufus Wainwright and Northern California’s Molly Tuttle.
