Duran Duran to play prostate cancer benefit in honor of Andy Taylor in Menlo Park
New romantics Duran Duran will play an intimate fundraiser show at Menlo Park’s Guild Theatre next month to benefit U.K. charity the Cancer Awareness Trust.
The band’s guitarist Andy Taylor was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer in 2018. His bandmates did not learn the news until 2022, days before Duran Duran was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
“He’s having a very tough go of it,” close friend Nile Rodgers told RIFF earlier this year. There is potential new life-extending treatment being researched right now, according to a news release, and the Menlo Park show will fundraise for this research to help people like Taylor.
The benefit concert will take place on Aug. 19. A ticket presale for members of the Duran Duran VIP Fan Community starts Monday, July 17 at 12 p.m. The general ticket sale will take place on Wednesday, July 19 at 12 p.m.
“We would like to thank our fans and the organizers of this benefit who have given us the chance to help our long-time friend and colleague Andy Taylor,” drummer Roger Taylor said. said in a news release. “We have always described ourselves as a ‘band of brothers,’ and that has never been more true than in this very moment.”
The Cancer Awareness Trust’s founder, Sir Chris Evans, said in a written statement that the research his organization is doing has already “been able to help turn Andy’s life around.”
It was not immediately made clear or announced what treatment Taylor has undergone.
“With the support of Duran Duran and their incredible fanbase, the revolutionary new treatment could well both improve Andy’s quality of life and extend it significantly,” Evans said in his statement. “Andy will receive the latest precision medical treatment, emanating from some recently successful clinical trials, along with the ongoing support that the Cancer Awareness Trust is providing.”
