Green Day announce kitschy rerelease of landmark ‘Dookie’ album
Bay Area punk rock legends Green Day are offering a “demaster” of their seminal album Dookie in 15 unconventional, and in some cases, obsolete or highly inconvenient formats. Anybody have a phonograph lying around? How about a Game Boy or a Fisher Price record player?
There is a collectible element. Each of the 15 songs will get its own “demaster” treatment. For a hint of ’90s nostalgia, fans have a chance to get their very own Big Mouth Billy Bass playing “Basket Case.” Some fans will be hard-pressed to even have a way of playing some of the songs, which are in 8-track or floppy disk formats.
The songs won’t be available to just any fan, though. These are extremely limited edition collectibles, with a small number of each available via a drawing, with entries ranging from $19 to $99 per item. Only one “Chump” on a Teddy Ruxpin exists, while there are 50 “Having a Blast” floppy disks. Maybe even more entertaining is that some of the formats are limited in how they store the material, so some don’t even have enough space for the complete track. In the words of the band via an accompanying press release: “It’s the way the album was never meant to be heard.”
The band collaborated with Southern California art studio BRAIN to develop the unusual formats. Find all the information online.
