Hardly Strictly Bluegrass announces first round of 2024 artists

Robert Plant & the Sensational Space Shifters perform at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco on Oct. 5, 2019.

The producers of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass have shared the initial lineup for the 2024 edition of the free music festival, which returns to Golden Gate Park in San Francisco from Oct. 4 to 6.

The lineup is currently topped by Robyn Hitchcock, Glen Hansard, Greensky Bluegrass, Big Star’s Radio City 50th Anniversary, The Wood Brothers, Fruition, Bobby Rush, Haley Heynderickx, The Bones Of J.R. Jones and Alice Gerrard. Per tradition, the festival teased the artists with a medley on the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass website.

Additional performers for the festival, which is approaching its 24th year, will be announced soon. Hardly Strictly Bluegrass was founded by the late Warren Hellman in 2001.  It returned to Golden Gate Park in 2022, following two years of pandemic cancelations, during which time producers streamed archival footage and filmed physically distanced new performances throughout the Bay Area.

The festival comes after the passing of longtime operations producer Greg Wynn, following a two-year cancer battle.

“This year has been difficult for all of us. Our entire staff is working tirelessly to honor Greg’s memory,” HSB Executive Producer Sheri Sternberg said in a written statement.

Producers have chose to rename the event’s busiest intersection Wynn’s Crossing.

“This was a spot where he spent a lot of time monitoring traffic flow to ensure the best possible experience for everyone, so it seems fitting,” Sternberg said.
