In the Name of Love concert to honor MLK Jr. through songs of Aretha Franklin
Living Jazz and SFJAZZ have partnered to produce In the Name of Love, the 21st performance honoring Martin Luther King, Jr., this time through the music of Aretha Franklin.
The event will take place on Jan. 18 at Paramount Theatre in Oakland and aims to deliver a message of unity, celebrate communities of Color,
Oakland artist, songwriter and educator Kev Choice will lead a local lineup that includes “America’s Got Talent” finalist Dee Dee Simon, Adji Cissoko of Alonzo King LINES Ballet, Chika Di (featured on “Euphoria”), EMMY-winning artist SōLauren, Destiny Muhammad, Howard Wiley’s Band and the Awesöme Orchestra Collective. SFJAZZ High School All-Stars and Alumni, Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir Ensemble, the 200-member Living Jazz Children’s Project Choir and others will also perform.
The event will be held in partnership with the City of Oakland and will include the presentation of the Oakland Citizen Humanitarian Award to Andrew Park, executive director of Trybe, for his work with the city’s San Antonio, Clinton and Little Saigon neighborhoods for more than two decades.
