Pinole to give Green Day key to the city, honor band with mural today
The East Bay town of Pinole will honor its most famous rocker former residents, Green Day, with a celebration recognizing the band’s roots and impact as punk rock icons. The band will get a key to the city and a mural and plaque on the outside of the band members’ childhood hangout across the street from Pinole Valley High School: a 7-Eleven on Pinole Valley Road.
The presentation begins shortly after 3 p.m. The mural will include the band’s likeness and song lyrics. The band famously played a gig at Pinole Valley High School in 1990.
The plaque, installed outside of the store, includes a fitting lyric: “At the center of the earth in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven….Billie, Mike, and Tre were here.”
The event also celebrates the partnership between 7-Eleven and the band’s Punk Bunny Coffee. There will be a Punk Bunny truck on site offering tastings, as well as merch giveaways.
The key to the city presentation and honor comes two days after Green Day performed at Oracle Park in San Francisco.
