Herbie Hancock, Maze, The Family Stone to play San Jose Jazz Summer Fest
Fourteen-time Grammy-winning jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, soul and funk group Maze honoring Frankie Beverly (who will pass the microphone to Tony Lindsay), The Family Stone, Cory Henry, trumpeter Shamar Allen and New Breed Brass Band will headline the 34th annual San Jose Jazz Summer Fest this August.
The three-day event will run from Aug. 9 to 11 on nine indoor and outdoor stages at Plaza de César Chavez in downtown San Jose.
The lineup of more than 80 artists includes performers of jazz, soul, Latin music, funk, salsa, global music, bossa nova, blues and other genres.
“While people are still getting back on their feet after several years of setbacks with rising inflation and a myriad of other challenges, we’ve closely looked at how we can provide an unrivaled experience at a price point that best meets our community,” San Jose Jazz Executive Director Brendan Rawson said in a news release.
To that effect, San Jose Jazz has added an additional price tier for early bird ticket buyers.
“We’re greatly looking forward to Summer Fest exhibiting the breadth of the jazz tradition as it moves into the future, and providing an inclusive atmosphere where all people are celebrated,” Rawson said.
Additional acts include Lisa Fischer & Grand Baton, Jahari Stampley Trio, Eddie 9V, Nico Segal, Sean Mason Quartet, Dominique Fils-Aimé, Jane Monheit, Natalie Cressman & Ian Faquini, NIKARA Presents Black Wall Street, Jorge Luis Pacheco Trio, Roberta Gambarini Quartet, Lucía Gutiérrez Rebolloso, Ken Okada Group featuring YOYOKA, Andrey Chmut with the Dave Burns Quintet, Groover Quartet with Mike LeDonne, SE:UM, Alexis & La Original, Agua Pura, The JuJu Exchange, Janet Evra: Meet Me In Paris, The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol & Charles Haynes, Cabanijazz Project, Pascal Bokar, Huney Knuckles, Alejandro Brittes Trio, Dolphin Hyperspace, Karl Perazzo & Mike Spiro Y Su Conjunto Karabali, Baycoin Beats, Michael Davis Hip Bone Big Band, San Jose Jazz High School All Stars and more to be announced later.
The Latin Tropical Stage will now be inside the ticketed festival grounds on Park Avenue, next to the Main Stage, with performances by Grammy-winning salsa and Latin jazz band Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Karl Perazzo & Mike Spiro Y Su Conjunto Karabali, Cabanijazz Project, Agua Pura, Alexis & La Original and more.
The event will take place at a recently upgraded Plaza de César Chávez, with re-sodded green spaces, colorful flowers, Adirondack chairs, sun umbrellas and games like ping pong and corn hole. Food and drink vendors will again be on hand for the festival.
Three-day early bird tickets range from $105 to $550. Tickets are available at the San Jose Jazz website.
