The San Francisco Symphony has announced programming for its summer season, “Summer with the Symphony,” which will run from July 4 to Aug. 4 with indoor performances at Davies Symphony Hall, and outdoors at Stanford Live’s Frost Amphitheater, Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View and Sigmund Stern Grove.
The nine programs at Davies include classical music shows conducted by Carlos Miguel Prieto, who will be leading a performance on July 11 of Spanish favorites, joined by soprano Caroline Corrales and guitarist Pablo Sáinz-Villegas. This program will also be performed at Stanford Live’s Frost Amphitheater on July 13. Then, on July 25, Earl Lee will conduct a performance of Carlos Simon’s Fate Now Conquers, featuring violinist Stella Chen.
On July 23 and 24, John Legend joins the symphony for a performance of reimaginings of Legend’s greatest hits and songs from his newest album, LEGEND. On July 27, Ben Folds joins symphony, led by conductor Edwin Outwater, to perform his own songs. Folds has performed with the San Francisco Symphony three ties before.
On July 18, conductor Martin Herman will lead a performance of The Beatles’ greatest hits, brought to life by the musicians of Classical Mystery Tour. The concert will feature the set played by The Beatles on their first North American tour in 1964, as well as favorites from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, The White Album, Abbey Road and Let It Be. On Aug. 1, conductor Ted Sperling leads the symphony and guest vocalists in The Trailblazing Music of Joni Mitchell, Carole King and Carly Simon.
Summer with the Symphony includes two film performances, with musicians playing the scores of films while the films play behind them. The programs include Disney: The Sound of Magic on July 12 and 14, featuring parts from more than 10 Disney films like “Encanto,” “Moana” and “The Lion King;” and “La La Land” on Aug. 3 and 4.
Separately, Outwater will conduct a show called The Movie Music of John Williams, featuring the music of “Star Wars,” “Indiana Jones,” “Jurassic Park” and more. This concert, which will be held at Davies on July 19 and at Frost Amphitheater on July 20, won’t include the movie clips.
On July 4, the SF Symphony returns to Shoreline for its annual Fourth of July performance, again led by Outwater. Vocalist Jessica Vosk will join the musicians to perform popular songs celebrating the power of heroes from “Wicked,” “Beaches” and more. The concert concludes with a fireworks display. The same group will perform again at Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco on July 7. This time, Vosk will sing the music of the Eagles, Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt and others.
