Producers of the annual Stanford Jazz Festival on Monday announced this summer’s lineup, including Ambrose Akinmusire Owl Song featuring Bill Frisell and Herlin Riley, The Bad Plus, Tommy Igoe Groove Conspiracy, Dave Douglas, Anat Cohen, Marquis Hill, Tierney Sutton and Tamir Hendelman and George Cables Trio.

The second-longest-running jazz festival on the West Coast, which will run from June 20 to Aug. 3, also includes Taylor Eigsti, Ann Hampton Callaway with the SJW 50/50 Jazz Orchestra, Richard Howell performing John Coltrane, Marcus Shelby Quintet, Carmen Lundy, Jazz Mafia playing the Grateful Dead, Sam Reider with Anat Cohen, and others.

The concerts take place on the Stanford University campus, at Bing Concert Hall, Dinkelspiel Auditorium, Campbell Recital Hall and Frost Amphitheater. See the schedule below and the full lineup on the event’s website. Tickets will go on sale on April 18.

Stanford Jazz Festival was founded in 1972 by saxophonist, arranger and educator Jim Nadel. It’s now connected to Stanford Jazz Workshop, an intensive summer education program staffed with acclaimed musicians, many of whom will perform at the festival. Students enrolled in a session receive free tickets to the festival.

Oakland-raised trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire’s Owl Song trio with Bill Frisell and New Orleans drummer Herlin Riley will open the festival on June 21. Berkeley saxophonist George Brooks performs on June 23 for the 10th iteration of his Indian Jazz Journey showcase. On June 28, the Bay Area’s Richard Howell performs John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme.”

The festival’s gender-balanced 50/50 Orchestra will be joined by singer and composer Ann Hampton Callaway on June 29.

Over the last 52 years, Stanford Jazz Festival has hosted Dizzy Gilespie, McCoy Tyner and Stan Getz, and modern masters like Joshua Redman, Terence Blanchard and Taylor Eigsti.
