The Stern Grove Festival, which has provided admission-free concerts to hundreds of thousands in San Francisco for more than 80 years, will return with in-person concerts in June, Mayor London Breed announced on Thursday.
The 84th season will begin on June 20 and run Sundays through Aug. 29 with its annual Big Picnic concert. Performers were not immediately announced.
Attendance will remain free, but will be limited due to COVID-19 precautions this summer, with advance ticket reservations required. Additionally, all guests will need to wear a mask. Fencing will be erected to control crowd size. Other safety-related protocols will be announced closer to the first performance. Each show will also be live-streamed for those not able to attend.
“The return of live music marks a joyful part of San Francisco’s recovery,” Breed said in a prepared statement. “For more than 80 years, Stern Grove Festival has been bringing us world class performances in a beautiful public park—free and accessible to all.”
All concerts for the 2021 season will begin at 2 p.m. at Sigmund Stern Grove at 19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard. What would have been Stern Grove’s 83rd annual season was canceled last spring due to the pandemic. That lineup included Animal Collective, Jimmy Cliff, Cuco, Billy Ray Cyrus, Macy Gray, Hanson, Tank and the Bangas and Tower of Power, as well as regular participants San Francisco Ballet and San Francisco Symphony.
