Another Planet Entertainment on Tuesday announced its long-rumored Golden Gate Park event that will follow Outside Lands: A day-long concert featuring System Of A Down, Deftones, The Mars Volta, Viagra Boys and VOWWS on Aug. 17

The first single-day ticketed nighttime concert at Golden Gate Park, under the banner of “Golden Gate Park Concerts at the Polo Field,” will use some of the stages and infrastructure of Outside Lands, and was approved by San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 2023. It will take place entirely within Golden Gate Park’s Polo Field from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. and be co-produced by Live Nation.

The City’s Recreation and Park Department will also win, getting.a portion of proceeds that will help prevent cuts to programming, according to a news release. Mayor London Breed said in 2023 that the city “currently faces a two-year budget deficit of $780 million.” The money will be used for painting city parks, playgrounds and programming for children and seniors, San Francisco Recreation and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg said last year.

“We are expecting fans from not just the Bay Area but from across the U.S. and internationally to travel to the city injecting money into the local economy,” said Allen Scott, Another Planet president of concerts and festivals, in a written statement. “From hotels to local restaurants and everything in between, this will be a great night of music and a great economic boost for the city.”

System Of A Down’s appearance is the band’s only performance in 2024 other than at Sick New World Festival in Las Vegas. The band last performed in the Bay Area in 2021. Sacramento’s Deftones’ most recent album is 2020’s Ohms. The Mars Volta has been busy the last couple of years, releasing Que Dios Te Maldiga Mi Corazon in 2023 and a self-titled album the prior year.

Artist presales will begin on Wednesday, April 10 at 10 a.m. Another Planet will also have a presale the following day at the same time. The general sale begins on Friday, April 12 at 10 a.m. Tickets range from $169 for general admission to $399 for VIP and will be available at the Golden Gate Park Concerts at the Polo Field website and via Ticketmaster. VIP tickets included an up-close viewing area, upgraded restrooms, private lounges and bars, bleacher seating, expedited entry and more.

There’s a long history of live music in Golden Gate Park, which also includes the free Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Neil Young have famously performed under the cypress trees in the 1960s and ’70s. Another Planet introduced nighttime concerts in 2008 with Outside Lands. The Aug. 17 show is the first in the Golden Gate Park Concerts at the Polo Field series.

According to the Board of Supervisors approval, the outdoor nighttime concerts would be capped at 65,000 attendees per day, which is 10,000 less than the cap for Outside Lands. Other than the Polo Fields, Lindley Meadow will be used for the box office and ticketing.

As during Outside Lands, Another Planet will take measures to lessen noise and traffic impacts, including operating a community hotline for neighbors, traffic control, offering shuttles to and from the event and other precautions.

Outside Lands will be held Aug. 9 to 11. Its lineup will be announced on April 23.
