UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals mark annual Notes & Words benefit with Dan Wilson
Semisonic frontman and acclaimed songwriter Dan Wilson will headline UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals’ 15th annual Notes & Words show at the Fox Theater in Oakland on May 11.
The benefit concert will include performances by the Bay Area’s Curtis Family C-Notes (who appeared on “America’s Got Talent” last year) and readings from best-selling authors Nicholas D. Kristof and C Pam Zhang. All of the proceeds will go to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals. The event has raised $16 million in its first 15 years.
Dan Wilson, who recently restarted Semisonic in addition to releasing solo music, has been busy as a songwriter for major artists behind the scenes. In February he won a Grammy for Best Country Song for “White Horse,” which he co-wrote with Chris Stapleton.
He also wrote and produced Adele’s “Someone Like You” (off 2011 album 21; Album of the Year) and The Chicks’ “Not Ready to Make Nice” (2007 Song of the Year). He’ll perform songs he wrote for those artists as well as Jon Batiste, Taylor Swift, John Legend and others.
Wilson is also a parent of a child who was born prematurely.
Kristof is a New York Times columnist, where he was previously bureau chief in Hong Kong, Beijing and Tokyo. With his wife, Sheryl WuDunn, he wrote five books and was awarded two Pulitzers, one with WuDunn in 1990 for their coverage of China, and the second in 2006 for his columns on Darfur. He will be reading from his new memoir, “Chasing Hope: A Reporter’s Life.”
Zhang’s debut novel, “How Much of These Hills is Gold,” was long-listed for the Booker Prize and Barack Obama named it one of his favorites in 2020. Her latest work is “Land of Milk and Honey.”
Tickets for the benefit show start at $100. For more information, visit the event’s website. The event includes pre-show cocktail party and an after-party with desserts, drink and silent disco.
