Quick Takes: “Where’d Your Weekend Go?” – The Mowgli’s
You wouldn’t have been faulted for confusing The Mowgli’s with Grouplove when both bands emerged in 2010 with infectious indie pop, day-glow color schemes, shared male-female vocal leads and diverse lineups that highlighted the individuality of each member. But while Grouplove increasingly used more psychedelia and hippy folk on their albums, The Mowgli’s began to differentiate by remaining in that pure pop space.
That remains the case on the Los Angeles sextet’s third album, Where’d Your Weekend Go?, 11 breezy tracks that blow right by in the blink of an eye. That’s a good thing for pop music. Write songs that drag on and on, and you’ll want them to end. But at the right length, you get just enough before you start getting sick of them. On Where’d Your Weekend Go?, only the album closer (“Open Energy,” 4:03) crosses the four-minute mark. The songs have all of the traits that would annoy people: The “Hey!” chants, big, often-overused, chorus, clapping, dance-pop verses that would be indistinguishable from each other — if they repeated too many times.
The trick the Mowgli’s successfully completed is not repeating themselves. Each of the 11 tracks doesn’t overstay its welcome, and that increases the listening experience of the album as a whole.
