SAN FRANCISCO — Washington State singer-songwriter Benson Boone brought his Fireworks & Rollerblades tour to the Masonic on Wednesday with a performance full of energy and charisma.
The artist, who got his start on TikTok, was briefly an “American Idol” contestant before withdrawing, and signing to Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds’ record label, started the night on piano, playing a verse of his ballad “Intro,” which led into the upbeat “Be Someone,” as attendees sang along.
Supported by a band, Boone went on to show his wide vocal range—from earthy tones to a high falsetto—on songs from 2023 EP Pulse like “Coffee Cake” and “What Was.” But the majority of the focus was on his debut long-player, Fireworks & Rollerblades, which he just released in April. Boone performed intimate ballads like “Hello Love” and “Friend,” and energetic tunes like “Drunk In My Mind” and “Cry.”
Whenever he wanted the focus on his singing, Boone stripped back everything other than the piano, such as on the heartfelt first verse of “Slow It Down.” But he could ramp the pace back up quickly, and the song was soon an upbeat anthem. Boone chatted with the audience between songs, and fans gave him pairs of sunglasses, letters, T-shirts and even a glittery cowboy hat.
Before introducing “My Greatest Fear,” Boone talked about his own.
“When you find someone that you love so much and you think about losing that person, it’s very intense, and this is what I wrote this song about,” he said.
The 21-year-old singer also performed an unreleased song, “Pretty Slowly.” Characteristic of his style, this song began slowly with just Boone singing over a piano melody before adding elements of country into the piece for a more energetic chorus an continuing to build until the song turns into a rocker by the last verse, with Boone belting away as the song came to an end.
The show-stopping finale consisted of his powerful, viral single “Beautiful Things,” which Boone performed while keeping the energy high and allowing the crowd to sing along with his quivering, gravelly drawl.
British singer Mimi Webb was in charge of opening the show with her captivating emotive singing and personal lyrics from her debut album, Amelia. Webb began with “Freezing,” a bright and energetic tune that had the crowd jumping on the floor, followed by “Ghost of You,” “Remind You” and “Both of Us,” all from her last album.
“We’re gonna bring a little bit of London over here,” she said as an introduction her new single “Mistake.”
