PALO ALTO, Calif. — Pop singer Clairo brought her soothing vocal melodies to Frost Amphitheater at Stanford on Sunday night for a stop on her Charm Tour.
Singer-songwriter Claire Cottrill, who broke out in 2017 with single “Pretty Girl,” started the evening alongside her band, acting out a get-together. While a loopy instrumental played, they sat and talked for several minutes until standing up to perform the introspective “Nomad,” the intro to her 2024 album, Charm. The stage was arranged with the band situated in a semicircle behind her, on risers, under a large warm light. The intended feel was for the whole thing to take place in a living room. Then came “Thank You,” off the same album, and 2019’s “Softly.”
Clairo softly scatted the intro to 2017’s “Flaming Hot Cheetos.” After “How” and “Bambi,” she shouted out rapper Freddie Gibbs, who’d invited her to his show in Los Angeles the day before to perform “Terrapin” for his audience.
She spent the evening using her airy voice, which matched that of her studio recordings, while bobbing her head, swinging her arms and prancing around the stage. Every so often, Clairo would play the piano beside her.
Other highlights included “Add Up My Love, “North,” “Glory of the Snow” and “Harbor,” the latter from 2021’s Sling, which was added by fan request.
“I want to do something special tonight,” Clairo said before she and her band broke out with a cover of David Byrne’s “Everyone’s in Love with You.” The visuals behind the band were filled with greens and blue hues.
Clairo capped off her set with a run of five fan favorites, starting with 2018’s heartfelt “4EVER” and including “Amoeba,” which she played on a keyboard.
“That was the hardest any crowd has gone for me! Keep it up!” she shouted before the crowd loudly sang along on “Bags.”
Following that came upbeat and hopeful track “Sexy To Someone” and set closer “Juna.”
South African singer-songwriter Alice Phoebe Lou set the mood for the evening, preceding Clairo with a 45-minute set. Making her first Bay Area appearance since an April headlining gig at the Fillmore, she showcased her wide range that paired well with her soft singing on tracks like 2020’s “Touch” and “Open My Door.”
“Witches” was a fan favorite, which preceded the closing track “Dirty Mouth,” off 2021’s Glow.
