SAN FRANCISCO — Only legends can stick around for 50 years and still fill venues. Lee Fields and his band, The Expressions, did just that at the Mezzanine Saturday night in support of their latest album, Special Night.

After The Expressions warmed the crowd with a performance by Lady Wray, the band stayed on stage and introduced Lee Fields. Dance quickly broke out as Fields led the band through a majority of the tracks off the new album.

Lee Field and The Expressions couldn’t go any more hand-in-hand on soulful tracks like “I’m Coming Home” and the title track. The audience went wild with “Ladies” and “Always a Faithful Man.” After a short encore break, the band returned to the stage to perform “Honey Dove,” a slow melodic meditation that slowly morphed into a fast funky dance piece.
