SAN FRANCISCO — Chicago rapper LUCKI brought his Gemini Tour to the Masonic on Wednesday, supporting his new album, GEMINI!
The 28-year-old, whose name is Lucki Camel, Jr. helped innovate cloud rap in 2013 with his debut, Alternative Trap. He was just 17 at the time and the success led to collaborations with FKA Twigs, Danny Brown and Chance the Rapper. In 2019, single “4 The Betta” pushed him even higher up the totem pole.
He ran onto the stage in an all-black outfit, Prada boots and covered in diamonds, opening with “GEEKED N BLESSED,” off 2022’s FLAWLESS LIKE ME. “Super Ski” and “4 The Betta” followed, with attendees rapping every lyric.
Other highlights included laidback cuts like “Sunset” and “Faith,” which incorporated chillwave, and hype tracks like “Randomly,” “New Drank” and “Y NOT?” Despite new tracks like “TWIN FLOW” and “Heavy On My Heart” being released just two months ago, his Bay Area fans already knew the lyrics.
Midway through “Unlimited,” LUCKI disappeared. After a few minutes, he provided an explanation while still behind the stage.
“Sorry y’all; give me a few minutes! I gotta switch my shoes, these are too uncomfortable.”
Camel performed to dreamy and melancholic backing tracks. His delivery deviated from what most view as hip-hop these days. He didn’t rely on high energy and aggression, and instead used his lower register to create a mellow vibe. At the end of the set, he shook fans’ hands.
He ended the show with “Busy Day,” off 2021’s WAKE UP LUCKI, a collaborative album with producer F1LTHY.
“S.F. I love y’all so much,” he said. “Y’all always show out when I stop by. Stay safe and see you soon.”
LUCKI’s tour DJ, Killa Kam, opened the concert with an hour-long set of high-energy modern hip-hop staples that kept the mosh pits active. Toward the middle of his set, he spun Juice WRLD’s “Robbery,” after which Kam paid homage to several deceased rappers.
“Rest in peace Juice, rest in peace PNB Rock and rest in peace Capital STEEZ,” he announced.
The rest of the set consisted of upbeat tracks like Nettspend’s “nothing like uuu,” Playboi Carti’s “H00DBYAIR” and Chief Keef’s “Love Sosa.”
