SAN FRANCISCO — Swedish house trio Swedish House Mafia celebrated finding Paradise Again at the first of two Chase Center shows on Friday. The title of the album by DJs Sebastian Ingrosso, Steve Angello and Axwell was a fitting description of the childhood friends’ reunion after a six-year break that ended just before the pandemic struck in 2020.

Paradise Again was released last April and is, amazingly enough, the group’s first following several hit singles and tours since 2008. Swedish House Mafia performed to a packed house in San Francisco, the last stop on the North American leg of its world tour.

The EDM trailblazers brought intense energy into their set, performing behind a DJ rig with multiple decks, below a gigantic stone-like LED ring, which moved throughout the performance. The resulting effect made it appear as though the trio were floating on a cloud.

The hit-heavy set was laden with the mega-bass, electro-house music for which the group is known. Smashing through transitions, the bass drops for the most popular songs were accentuated by pyrotechnics, colorful flares and mesmerizing light shows. The group kicked off with new tune “Can U Feel It.” Quickly transitioning, they launched into 2012 singles “Greyhound” and Tinie Tempeh collaboration “Miami 2 Ibiza.”

Next up was “Sacrifice,” their collaboration with The Weeknd for his 2021 album, Dawn FM. Revisiting Paradise Again, the group performed several new songs like “19.30,” “Calling On,” “Frankenstein,” “Redlight” and “One (Your Name).” Other hits included “Be,” “Show Me Love,” “Don’t You Worry Child,” “For You/Save the World,” “Moth to a Flame” and “Heaven Takes You Home.”

Brazilian DJ Vintage Culture preceded the headliners with a nearly 45-minute-long set, through which he heroically pushed through despite it being plagued by a series of fire alarms and evacuation orders triggered by the massive amounts of smoke generated by fog machines. Attendees were hesitant to leave the building but many reluctantly shuffled to exits, waiting for 20 minutes while the house lights came on and evacuation orders flashed on screens around the arena.

Ultimately, the building’s security determined that there was no need to evacuate and attendees returned to their excited dancing. The music had never stopped and soon enough, the light show resumed. The DJ and producer, whose name is Lukas Rafael Ruiz Hespanhol, played a series of tunes including remixes of songs like New Order’s “Blue Monday” and Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall.”

DJ Holographic opened the show with a 30-minute set. The Detroit native performed soulful tracks from her 2020 debut EP, Parallel Shifting, while hypnotic holographs were transposed on screens above. She showed high energy and engaged early arrivers.
