PHOTOS: Young Posse gets ‘Hungry’ in the Mission
SAN FRANCISCO — Newcomer K-pop group Young Posse brought good vibes to Victoria Theatre on election night to a city that needed some, at its first Bay Area concert and on its first U.S. tour.
The quintet of Sunhye, Yeonjung, Jiana, Doeun and Jieun debuted just last year and has released three EPs since. What makes Young Posse unique in the crowded K-pop space is that it all its original songs are entirely rap, much of it influenced by ’90s West Coast hip-hop artists like Snoop Dogg and G-funk by the likes of Warren G. The run of shows on its Hungry Tour is winding down on the West Coast.
The group led off its two-hour set with a series of bass-heavy uptempo tunes from each of its EPs. First up was “POSSE UP!” “Loading…” and “ROTY.”
With not a lot of songs to its name as of yet, the group then leaned into a series of covers, starting with Doeun and Sunhye duetting on Dua Lipa’s “Levitating.” Not a rap song? Well, the original featured DaBaby.
Jiana followed with her take on Ariana Grande’s “Honeymoon Avenue,” where she showcased an impressive vocal range. Jieun took the stage right after with her energetic cover of Avril Lavigne’s “Sk8er Boi,” where she danced across the stage, swinging her arms and hair.
Doeun and Jiana duetted on “SMILEY” by Korean singers Yena and Bibi. The upbeat pop tune had the two dancing across the stage while the crowd cheered and sang along.
The covers portion was rounded out with Yeonjung and Sunhye performing Bruno Mars’ and Cardi B’s 2017 hit “Finesse,” where Yeonjung showcased her ability to both sing and rap during her rendition of K-Pop artist CL’s “LIFTED,” and Sunhye delivering an energetic take on Måneskin’s “Beggin’.”
“We’re overwhelmed with happiness and it’s a dream to perform in front of you all!” Sunhye shouted during a quick break from the music.
Young Posse then taught the audience to say “happy birthday” in Korean to celebrate Jieun’s 17th birthday—all the group members are still in their teens—while delivering a cake onstage.
Following hype track “Ate That” and the melodic “Skyline,” the group sat in a semicircle and took turns singing Slate’s “Oh Little Girl” and Miguel hit “Sure Thing.”
The group ended on a high note with fan favorite “MACARONI CHEESE,” before returning for an encore of repeat performances: “Ate That” and “XXL.” As they rapped, the five walked down the aisles of there small theater, giving hi-fives and taking selfies with fans.
