MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — If you thought the crack of explosive fireworks ended with the Fourth of July, Fall Out Boy would like to have a word. The Chicago band rolled into Shoreline Amphitheatre on its So Much For (Tour) Dust run Wednesday, in support of So Much (For) Stardust, an album that takes the band back to its emo roots.
Their performance included a healthy dose of older material, replete with rock and roll bombast. The show’s lineup featured fiery U.K. rockers Bring Me the Horizon, Royal and the Serpent and Daisy Grenade, all of whose music spans a wide musical spectrum but contains some emo along their paths.
Fall Out Boy brought the firepower in its opening one-two punch of “Love from the Other Side” and “The Phoenix,” with a rapid succession of pyrotechnics, fire blasts and smoke filling the stage.
“There’s so many of you, I’m a little intimidated,” vocalist Patrick Stump said as he looked out over the cascading crowd.
The production was a massive undertaking, though never overwhelming the band: flames, bubbles, confetti, a massive inflatable dog. The set was expertly paced, placing new material with the older tracks. Fall Out Boy have played the Bay Area plenty of times of the years, but this show carried a different energy; a fusion of vibrant production and magnetic performance.
The array of stage lights lowered, creating an intimacy that recreated one of the countless clubs Fall Out Boy would have played in the band’s earliest days.
After years of constant touring and albums, the band took a deserved break before Stardust, and seemed revitalized at Shoreline fore it. Stump sounded as crisp as ever. Bassist Pete Wentz and guitarist Joe Throman carried a relaxed but powerful poise.
Wentz spoke a number of times, offering up the meanings behind some of the band’s new material, as Stump traded barbs with him. New songs like “Heaven, Iowa” were magnificent, Stump’s voice soaring on the climax.
A crowd-organized flash mob of sorts broke out during “Fake Out,” when fans placed thin pink slips of paper over their phone light to create a unique lighting effect up to the lawn.
“I always felt like I didn’t fit in as a punk rock kid because I was also this music nerd,” Stump said before sitting down at a piano for a cover of Elvis Costello’s “Alison” and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.”
While he’s an emo hero, Stump is also a showman, with an understated charisma that drew in the crowd to sing back to him. At one point, Wentz picked a young fan out of the crowd, noticing it was his first Fall Out Boy show. He gave him a T-shirt, guitar picks and prime viewing real estate for a good portion of the set.
The theatrics got more complicated, with Wentz somehow pulling off a disappearing act into Stump’s piano before reemerging deep in the crowd for “Dance, Dance.” The home stretch was all about the hits, leaving the crowd breathless.
“We can pretend like we’re done and go backstage and have you cheer for us to come back,” Wentz deadpanned toward the end. “But we’re just gonna keep playing instead.”
The finale featured a fiery inferno along with “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up),” a rousing singalong on “Thnks fr th Mmrs” and an explosive, pyro-laden “Centuries.” In true Fall Out Boy fashion, the band sent fans home happy with one of its earliest tracks, “Saturday.”
The penultimate performance by Bring Me The Horizon was of a change of pace for the U.K. hard rockers. Trading its AI narrative for a simple black backdrop and lighting, the band played a raw and biting set that showcased its energy. Known for commanding fans to “open the pit,” frontman Oli Sykes was thrown at first by the all-seated venue.
“I’m not sure how we’re gonna do this, but we’ll figure it out,” Sykes said. “You can definitely bang your head.”
As the band is nearing the release of its second Post Human EP, the set was heavy on the one-off singles like “DiE4u,” “sTraNgeRs” and scintillating opener “AmEN!” Sykes remains a commanding presence, the crowd following in lockstep as he barked orders between and during songs. Though on songs like “Shadow Moses,” he did have a a little fun.
“Open your heart, open your mind, and open…the seating area,”he said.
Sykes took an extended trip into the audience for “Drown,” getting to the lawn to greet fans. The band closed with two of its biggest tracks in “Can You Feel My Heart” and “Throne,” getting fans to sing, jump and bang their heads. Security even got in on the act during the final song, calling out fans who didn’t kneel at Sykes command and pointing with flashlights at them.
New Jersey’s Royal & the Serpent provided some grunge-meets-punk energy in the afternoon sun. Donning a plaid vest and oversized suit, vocalist Ryan Santiago was a spark of energy, attacking the stage on both the upbeat and mid-tempo material.
Reciting the “Gay National Anthem,” Santiago also mixed in tracks like “Astroturf,” “One Nation Underdogs” and “I Can’t Get High.” The singer was flanked by a guitarist and drummer, both of whom were impressive.
Santiago’s voice was strong and raspy, especially on a terrific cover of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
The night kicked off with plenty of gusto with a set by power-punk upstarts Daisy Grenade. Vocalists Dani Nigro and Keaton Whittaker played off each other well, trading lines. The group has an inviting magnetism and electric energy, emphasizing the pop in pop-punk while also mixing in a swagger like Paramore. The band is certainly one to watch, especially with Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz in their corner.
