REVIEW: Karol G transforms into ‘La Bichota’ at Levi’s Stadium
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Although she’s been in the industry for nearly two decades, Carolina Giraldo Navarro — Karol G — is just now reaping the fruits of her labor. She’s the first female Latin artist to headline Lollapalooza, while her fourth studio album, MAÑANA SERÁ BONITO, was just the second Spanish-language album ever to debut at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart. She’s now playing stadiums in the U.S., and the second show of the tour landed at Levi’s Stadium on Monday night.
Levi’s was converted into a colorful beach paradise. Matching her album’s artwork, it became a rainbow of colors with light-up bracelets that synchronized for each song.
The show began with a short film narrated by none other than Morgan Freeman, detailing Karol G’s inner world and emotions while writing MAÑANA SERÁ BONITO. Broken up into parts that would later divide the concert into three acts, each section of the film followed a cartoon mermaid as she went on a journey to rediscover her bichota self after getting her heart frozen and losing her light.
A mermaid then inflated on stage and the Colombian superstar appeared in front of it sporting a fully encrusted diamond bodysuit, oversized shades and white, fuzzy knee-high boots. Her look fully embraced the fantasy of her the album, including her pastel pink hair, which many in attendance replicated with wigs.
As she stared into the crowd with bright eyes and a smile that stayed glued to her face throughout the night, the 32-year-old singer-songwriter dove straight into her latest album with “TQG.” One of her biggest collaborations to date, the song features Shakira and contains lyrics all about female empowerment. The chants of “La Bichota! La Bichota!” began and lasted for much of the concert.
With the support of a fully female band and accompanied by mostly female dancers, most songs had a richer sound and colorful aesthetic than they did on record. Karol G also made a point to repeatedly acknowledge women in the audience, pointing out several in outfits she found interesting.
“Aquí en [Santa Clara] las mujeres están bien chimbitas, pues!” she yelled, expressing that the women in attendance looked amazing.
Carrying on with the female empowerment theme, she quickly transitioned into “BESTIES,” the new album’s clubbing anthem. The song offered infectious bass lines and unexpected rhythmic patterns that perfectly represents the basis of her sound and partnership with Columbian producer Ovy On the Drums. The two have been working together on their their unique take on reggaetón since her debut project, Unstoppable.
Making sure to include past hits, Karol G sang “Mi Cama,” from 2018’s OCEAN. Midway through the third song of the night, she paused to look at the crowd and received a standing ovation. She threw up her hands into a heart symbol before thanking people for showing up before continuing on with “Tusa,” possibly her most famous song, and “AMARGURA” before exiting for an outfit and attitude change.
When Karol G reemerged from behind the stage, she was riding a giant chrome shark, seemingly transformed into a new woman. The singer traded her silky singing for rapping on the stand-out from the expanded edition of the new album, MAÑANA SERÁ BONITO (BICHOTA SEASON).
“Que sé escuché [Santa Clara]!” said yelled, asking for noise.
Karol G addressed the crowd in Spanish the entire night and appeared delighted to see a stadium full of Latinos of all backgrounds. During a roll call of sorts, the loudest cheers came from fans from Colombia and Mexico.
It was fitting, then, that Karol G brought out a female tuba player, accordionist and guitarist to perform “GUCCI LOS PAÑOS,” a banda-inspired song that calls out an ex-lover, to rapturous applause. She asked someone to lend her a sombrero and proceeded to sing sierreño-influenced “200 Copas,” off 2021’s KG0516.
Showing her inspirations from all types of Latin music, she also shined a light on Puerto Rico during “X SI VOLVEMOS,” her bachata-reggaetón collab with Romeo Santos. As an outro, she sang part of Santos’ groundbreaking “Noche De Sexo.”
After another dance interlude, she returned for the third act and slowed things down—riding in on a stone fixture with her pianist attached to the back. The pair made their way to the end of the catwalk for a stripped-down version of “Ocean,” the title track from her 2019 album, which she later dedicated to family, friends and lovers. The crowd quieted to hear her emotional and soulful singing.
Bringing in more of her band, Karol G dove back into MAÑANA SERÁ BONITO with a slowed rendition of “PERO TU” that ended with a trumpet solo. She told the crowd she was nervous performing, it being just the second show of the tour.
“Este show es una mega chimba!” she shouted (this is very cool!). She was so excited, in fact, that she requested for the audience to perform a massive wave, leading the effort that she called a career milestone herself.
Karol G seemed shocked that so many knew the words and sang along to “MI EX TENÍA RAZÓN,” a song released just last week. She asked the crowd to sing at acapella for her.
In her last two songs of the night, Karol G saved the best for last.
“Salud!” she yelled at the beginning of “MAMII,” one of the most-anticipated songs of the night. “PROVENZA,” meanwhile, concluded with a laser show, fireworks and a rainfall of rainbow confetti that turned the stadium into a huge rave.
The star ended the show with words of affirmation, encouraging attendees to never doubt themselves and pursue dreams.
