REVIEW: Maren Morris kicks off RSVP Redux tour at the Masonic
SAN FRANCISCO — In a whirlwind of country-pop magic, Texas native Maren Morris kicked off her highly anticipated RSVP Redux tour at the Masonic. Morris, who hasn’t toured in two years apart from a few fan club shows last year, explained how every show will have a different, making the tour a unique experience for her.
As the lights dimmed, Morris’ band kicked into the first chords of “RSVP,” from her 2019 album, Girl.
Her powerful vocals soared. Morris went on perform songs from throughout her songbook, from soulful country ballads to upbeat pop hits like “The Feels,” “GIRL,” “The Tree,” “Flavor,” “How it’s Done” and “Rich.”
At one point, Morris brought out an envelope-filled glass box, which she said contained songs requests. She picked two. The first was “Detour,” off 2022’s Humble Quest.
“Did we even rehearsed that one?” she asked her band, presumably joking.
The second was that album’s title track.
Morris’ intimate acoustic performances were a show highlight. For these, she went back to her country roots on tracks like “Get the Hell Out of Here” and “Good Friends.”
Between songs, she shared stories about her music and thanked fans for their support throughout her career.
She slowed down the first verse of fan favorite “My Church,” showing her dynamic vocal range, before finally going into the catchy chorus with the band.
Other surprises included a cover of Billy Idol’s “Dancing With Myself,” which the singer released as a single last February. She had a new song, too, which she said she’d written two months prior.
“Cut” was about pausing‚or taking an intermission—from difficult situations in life.
Morris closed out the show with an electrifying encore, playing her hits “Bones” and “The Middle,” a 2018 collaboration with producer Zedd, crossing completely over from country to dance and pop music. With her infectious energy and powerful vocals, she concluded with “80’s Mercedes.”
Folky singer-songwriter Allison Ponthier preceded the headliner and opened the show with “Crash Test Dummy,” from her recently released new EP, Breaking the Fourth Wall; and “Lie Detector” which she said was about falling in love with her girlfriend, on which she also played an acoustic guitar.
The Dallas native told several stories between seven songs in 30 minutes. Another was about how excited about touring with Morris, calling this a “Texas girls tour.”
Following “Hollywood Forever Cemetery,” one of several songs from 2021 EP Faking My Own Death, was followed by “Faking My Own Death,” the title track of her 2022 EP. Ponthier also debuted an unreleased song titled “Everywhere is in Texas,” a slow ballad about her home.
“I love my home state but I want it to be better. It’s a complicated place,” she said.
“I know that it sounds reckless but you don’t have to stay in Texas,” she sang.
Ponthier closed out her set with “Cowboy,” off the 2022 EP.
