LOS ANGELES — Berlin shoegaze and dark pop singer-songwriter Laura Carbone kicked off her first North American headlining tour Thursday at the Hi Hat, playing a set of material from her 2018 sophomore album, Empty Sea, and 2016 debut, Sirens.

Over the course of the show she proved deserving of her comparisons to the likes of sharp-edged and gauzy rockers like St. Vincent, Anna Calvi, PJ Harvey and Chelsea Wolfe.

Carbone’s set included “Who’s Gonna Save You,” “Cellophane Skin” and her latest single, “The Flowers Beneath Your Feet.” The noise dream-pop tune features Kip Berman of  The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, who will open for her later in the tour.

Carbone’s Berlin band—guitarist Mark Lewis, bassist Brodie White and drummer Jeff Collier—also criss-crossed psychedelia and enveloping feedback on several tracks.
