Country singer-songwriter Caroline Jones is just a few weeks from releasing her third album, Homesite (Oct. 20), and today she’s premiering the final video ahead of the album, for single “Talking to Milo.”

Jones, who’s performed with the likes of Jimmy Buffett and Kenny Chesney and more recently became the first female member of Zac Brown’s band, has called “Talking To Milo” the heaviest and most personal song that she’s written.

Jones, a soon-to-be mother, wrote the song (which she also co-produced) about having the conversation with her husband, Nick, to start a family. Besides the more practical aspects of the conversation, such as ensuring the two will still get to remain true to who they are and discussing career concerns, she acknowledges speaking to her husband’s late brother for guidance for the road ahead.

“Do you really want to do this baby?” she asks her husband on the chorus. “I swore I’d never let anyone change me/ Now I gotta grow up, stay in love/ Throw away plans like I don’t care that much/ Have a little fight in my heart for somebody besides me/ But you’ll be beside me, baby.”

The song also deals with the fear of losing a child, addressing how her mother-in-law faced that tragedy seven years earlier.

“Most mothers don’t make it through/ What your mom made it through/ And I kick myself because she reminds me there are worse things than free time to lose,” Jones sings.

In the video, a pregnant Caroline Jones recounts the conversation with Nick. With his back always facing the camera, we’re put into his position, hearing these acknowledgements from his point of view. She has a twinkle in her eye and sometimes it looks like she’s about to start crying. She holds her husband’s hand for support while delivering the lines. The two also look back at family photos, many of which include Nick’s late brother, Milo.

“We feel that Milo is our guardian angel, so I used his name and called on his presence in this song to help me make the most courageous leap I’ve yet made,” Jones told RIFF. “You can hear the musical embodiment of that leap and resolution in the outro of this song. The lyrics of this song are incredibly honest and special to me, my husband and his family.”

Following the release of Homesite, Jones will hit the road for her headlining Barefoot and Pregnant Tour. Jones said themes of motherhood and family building will join her existing themes of “grit and resilience” in her music.
