Roman Gokhman’s 10 favorite concerts of 2012
I probably went to more shows this year than ever before. This year, artists such as Florence and the Machine, Coldplay, the Black Keys, Of Monsters and Men and the reunited Garbage didn’t even crack the ranks of the contenders. That’s how I know I went to quite a few great concerts.
My rules were simple. It had to be a headlining show. Support acts didn’t count (sorry Grouplove; I saw you three times, but you opened for someone else each time), and neither did non-headliners at festivals. Franz Ferdinand put on one of my favorite performances at Outside Lands in August, but they only played for 30 minutes.
Close, but no cigar:
K.Flay (numerous shows)
Collective Soul at the Fillmore. June 13.
Public Enemy at Treasure Island Music Festival. Oct. 13.
Fang Island at the Great American Music Hall. Aug. 7.
Madonna at the HP Pavilion. Oct. 6
And now the Top 10.
10. Marina and the Diamonds. July 11. The Fillmore.
9. Foster the People (with Kimbra and Mayer Hawthorne). The Greek Theatre. June 29. This is an exception to my rule: The lineup jelled so well together that I can’t judge them individually.
8. Bruce Springsteen. Oracle Arena. Nov. 30.
7. Imagine Dragons. Great American Music Hall. Oct. 8.
6. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. The Fillmore. Oct. 21.
5. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. The Fox. May 2.
4. The Joy Formidable. The Independent. March 13.
3. Metallica. Outside Lands Music Festival. Aug. 11.
2. Metric. Great American Music Hall. June 19.
1. M83. The Fillmore. April 22.
