SAN FRANCISCO— San-Francisco-raised electronic producer and DJ Illenium performed at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium on Friday for the first of three San Francisco shows on his Ascend Tour. The artist, who’s real name is Nick Miller, is touring in support of his third album, Ascend, which has been streamed more than 100 million times.

Besides Friday’s Bill Graham show (of which there is a second on Sunday), he’s also headlining Chase Center on Saturday. All three shows are listed as being sold out, as was a concert at Staples Center in Los Angeles earlier in the week.

The Friday show was touted as a “throwback set,” meaning Illenium performed earlier material from his 2016 debut album, “Ashes,” which originally propelled him into the EDM spotlight.

Illenium’s melodic-bass style attracted electronic music lovers of all types. He opened his set with “Afterlife,” off Ashes and continued with old songs like “Sleepwalker” and “Spirals.” Throughout, he sprinkled in unreleased remixes of tunes like “Lost,” featuring Emilie Brandt, as well as hits by Porter Robinson, Rezz and Virtual Riot.

Illenium’s extensive stage production included his elevated DJ booth with attached LED screens in addition to a larger monitor behind him. Illenium mixed things up his track arrangement and integrated a significant amount of bass music into his performance. He had a noticable juxtaposition between softer and more emotional tunes and aggressive dubstep. These tracks included “Hide N’ Seek” by Zomboy and a remix of “Burial” by Skrillex.

An encore included Illenium’s unreleased collaboration with Excision, “Feel Something,” before confetti rained down and flames shot upward from the stage.

Illenium was preceded by electronic artists Pixel Terror and William Black who set the stage with a mix of both dubstep and melodic styles.
