The Dixie Chicks, who’s awaited new album Gaslighter arrives on July 17, are the next band from the South to change their name, dropping the “Dixie.” They’re now known simply as “The Chicks.”

The band joins Lady Antebellum, which changed its name to Lady A two weeks ago. The Chicks paired the announcement by releasing a new single, “March March.” The move comes in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd and the new movement to drop connotations  to America’s origins in slavery.

There’s another band with the name “The Chicks” in New Zealand, and that band has granted permission to the trio formerly known as the Dixie Chicks to take the name as well.

“A sincere and heartfelt thank you goes out to ‘The Chicks’ of NZ for their gracious gesture in allowing us to share their name,” America’s The Chicks said in a statement. “We are honored to co-exist together in the world with these exceptionally talented sisters. Chicks Rock!”
