Tuesday Tracks: Your Weekly New Music Discovery – June 8

Clockwise from top left: Genesis Owusu, Jasiah, Baby Queen, Foster (Colin Foster Taylor), Masked Wolf and Tennis System.
Ever find yourself skipping song after song on your playlist after the thousandth rotation? A fresh perspective often breathes life into music, so here are some new singles to give a spin! Genesis Owusu, Jasiah, Baby Queen, Foster, Masked Wolf and Tennis System are taking over this week’s collection of Tuesday Tracks.
Jasiah featuring Denzel Curry and Rico Nasty, “Art of War” — This explosive aggro-punk-rap track is the product of Ohio native Jasiah and his genre-blending stylings, complemented by the intense verses provided by the Denzel Curry and Rico Nasty. With staccato flows over the blaring synth horn tempo, this is a track worth wildin’ out.

Tennis System featuring Chadwick Johnson, “Autophobia” — The distorted, free strumming stylings paired with the crooning vocals of Tennis System feels somehow both nostalgic and new. The washed-out guitar evokes this grungy ’90s aesthetic perfect for vibing out in your local microbrewery with friends and an IPA in hand on a summer evening.
Masked Wolf, “Gravity Glidin” — Australian Masked Wolf raps with a smooth flow over the distorted synth- and bass-heavy arrangement on “Gravity Glidin.” He raps about his success even as he grapples with his previous and current struggles. Masked Wolf’s flow switches up several times throughout, going from a laidback and casual delivery one moment to hitting breakneck speed the next.

Foster, “as long as i have you” — A deeply somber cut from Foster, the song evokes Twenty One Pilots. Between the laidback flow and delivery over an acoustic guitar, you’d be within your rights to mistake it as the duo. Regardless, the song details the wistful story of lost love as a result of tragedy. The sentimental quality of the track will weigh heavy on the heartstrings of people longing for the quiet and intimate space of a long car ride with the one you care for the most.
Genesis Owusu, “Same Thing” — Here’s another MC from down under. The funky and soulful vocals of Genesis Owusu are bound to get listeners jumping out of their seats to groove with the beat. Following the release of his critically acclaimed album Smiling with No Teeth, he raps about maintaining a positive outlook in light of the influence of those looking to tear him down. The bouncy and fat bass licks make the track come alive, alongside the vibrant harmonized vocals by Owusu to deliver a funk-rap fusion full of flavor.

Baby Queen featuring MAY-A, “American Dream” — In a bit of social satire, Baby Queen sings about the fantastical relationship she desires to be in, contrasting the elusive nature of such a thing by comparing it to the “American Dream.” Funny, ironic and relatable, this alt-pop anthem also features Australian singer MAY-A on the chorus, solidifying a theme of Aussie representation for this week’s Tuesday Tracks.
Tim’s Pick: Genesis Owusu’s “Same Thing” stood out among a crowd of great contenders this week with its deep funk influences in the instrumental deviating hard from the synth- and reverb-heavy nature of most contemporary hip-hop tracks. With the success of his debut album in mind, I highly anticipate his next release, whenever it may be.
