Bay Area Indie promoters, an icon and a musician have teamed up to resurrect shuttered Oakland dive bar Stork Club.

The reopening of the bar and music club was spearheaded by Marc Ribak and Amy Carver of annual alt-music festival Mosswood Meltdown. Ribak and Carver again teamed up with director and local cultural icon John Waters, their frequent Mosswood Meltdown collaborator and host, Shannon Shaw of Shannon and the Clams, DJ Chris Owen, Billy Agan and Matt Patane of Eli’s Mile High Club, and Tony Bedard of Hemlock Tavern and Talent Moat.

Rechristened Thee Stork Club in honor of the new club’s garage rock roots, the venue will open for the first time on July 1 with appearances by Shaw, Waters and Owen (Budget Rock).

“Thee Stork Club taps into its Oakland predecessor’s DIY-trash ethos while infusing an entirely new energy (and an extra ‘E’) into the space,” Ribak said in a news release.

Thee Stork Club will have a full bar, separate from the main stage area, with a cocktail menu that celebrates the tacky drinks of the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s, and a design motif that harkens back to 1972. The indoor space will have a new custom-designed sound system. The bar’s outdoor space will also be redesigned.

Despite the refresh, the new owners said the bar will maintain its “energy of a blue-collar, family-run, local operation.”

Tickest for the first event, which is 21 and older, are on sale now.
