This week, we feature raucous blues from Larkin Poe, Americana-by-way-of-Ireland from We Banjo 3, bedroom pop from Jordana, neo-soul from Aquakultre, old-school country from The Watson Twins and the laidback folk of Josh Rouse.

We Banjo 3, “Hummingbird” – The darlings of the Irish American festival circuit, We Banjo 3 is comprised of two sets of brothers from Galway who play their own Celtic-flavored style of bluegrass. This gentle, cheerful song features – you guessed it – banjo; but also violin and mandolin, and a sweet-sounding falsetto on the chorus.

The Watson Twins, “Two Timin’” – Leigh and Chandra Watson, who you may remember from the great album they made with Jenny Lewis, Rabbit Fur Coat, are back with a new collaboration with celebrated producer Butch Walker. This rollicking honky-tonk number about a lover who won’t be true showcases the sisters’ signature harmonizing and has a boogie-woogie piano solo.

Larkin Poe, “Bad Spell” – Rebecca and Megan Lowell come barreling in with this bluesy tune about a love that’s like being under a bad spell: “You got me ringing like a doorbell/ You got me buzzing like a yellow bee.” Rebecca’s electric guitar is fuzzed out and ballsy like Jack White’s, but Megan’s lap steel is the special sauce that gives this song its oomph.

Aquakultre, “Lunch” – Bringing us a song about new love is CBC Searchlight award-winning rapper and neo-soul songwriter Lance Sampson, who records under the moniker Aquakultre. Built on a simple drum loop and electric piano riff, “Lunch” has a ’70s vibe but modern vocal effects, resulting in a very chill song about those sweet little moments in the beginning of a relationship.

Jordana, “Go Slow” – Jordana Nye took her indie pop into the studio for the first time for her third album, and she played all the instruments on the record herself. On this song, the verses are sung in meticulously layered harmonies, but the choruses are full of reverb-drenched backing vocals that make her sound like a choir. “I’ll go slow/ I could lose another race/ I’ve been living life in record time,” Jordana sings about taking a breath and taking a step back.

Josh Rouse, “Stick Around” – Singer-songwriter Josh Rouse now splits his time between Nashville and Spain. He wrote the batch of songs for his upcoming album Going Places while hunkered down with his family in Spain. This laidback, acoustic guitar-driven, folky song is livened up with a Memphis-style horn section. It’s got a real “Angel of Harlem” (Rattle and Hum-era U2) vibe to it.

Rachel’s Pick: I totally didn’t mean to have a theme this week, but with We Banjo 3, Larkin Poe and The Watson Twins, it looks like it’s Siblings Week here at Tuesday Tracks! My top pick is “Bad Spell” by Larkin Poe because I love their fresh new take on old-timey blues.
