This week’s new music roundup includes lo-fi rock from zzzahara, intimate jazz from Alabaster DePlume, hip-hop/R&B-fusion from TOBi, alt-rock from Holly Humberstone, alt-pop from Babebee and a soulful ballad from Gareth Donkin.

zzzahara, “Kensington” — Named after their favorite street in Angelino Heights, L.A. native zzzahara shares a nostalgic tune that’s meant to be the background track to your summer adventures. Sounding like the song that plays during the climax of a coming-of-age film, “Kensington” is carried by hazy guitars that have become synonymous with zzzahara’s sound. So much so that it grabbed the attention of fellow indie darling Eyedress, birthing their musical relationship and collaboration project, The Simps. “Kensington” is a love song for your summer nights that begs you to take in every moment as it is.

Alabaster DePlume featuring Momoko Gill, “Did You Know” — Sharing the first single from his upcoming LP, Come With Fierce Grace, instrumentalist Alabaster DePlume teams up with singer and drummer Momoko Gill for harrowing jazz. One of the few tracks on this LP that features lyrics, “Did You Know” is a hauntingly beautiful jazz-influenced song that showcases DePlume’s saxophone abilities. We are guided throughout the track by the bass-heavy instrument alongside Gill’s deep, soulful singing.

TOBi featuring Topaz Jones — “All Night Long” — Created with the intention of bringing life to any room the song is played in, “All Night Long” is a hip-hop-focused R&B blend with an early-2000s feel. This track mixes hi-hats, guitars and sampling for a triumphant backbeat reminiscent of early New York rap icons like Jay-Z. It’s impossible to listen and not feel empowered, which is exactly what TOBi aimed to do in this collaboration with Topaz Jones. The two play off one another’s verses so smoothly, making for a perfect summer cruising song.

Holly Humberstone, “Antichrist” — Delivering a powerful breakup anthem, Holly Humberstone returns with double singles from her awaited debut album, Paint My Bedroom Black, due Oct. 13. Of the two singles, “Antichrist” features an accompanying video that depicts the darkness and guilt that ending a relationship can bring up. Starting slowly with added distortion effects on her vocals, “Antichrist” keeps a consistent melody before picking up the tempo towards the end of the song. “I gave you bad love only,” Holly Humberstone sings, coming to terms with her decision to leave a relationship that had no future. It’s her second time in Tuesday Tracks.

Babebee, “COME WITH ME” — Pulling from their genre-bending influences, Babebee creates their own unique flair of bedroom pop on “COME WITH ME.” Babebee’s sweet and airy vocals lead this soft, alternative pop track that features light guitar lines throughout the song, ending with a change of pace by using strong percussion and belting of lyrics. It’s a song about finding yourself, and Babebee does a great job of making you feel their emotions through the songwriting and vocal inflections.

Gareth Donkin, “Nothing We Can’t Get Through” — Londoner Gareth Donkin sings a passionate ballad with soul elements about the power of love. This single is a great indicator of what you might hear on Donkin’s forthcoming debut album, Welcome Home, out Aug. 5. His silky vocals paired with simple, yet emotionally charged strings makes “Nothing We Can’t Get Through” a journey, taking you on a path of resilience.

Italie’s Pick: Holly Humberstone displays the layers of her songwriting abilities on “Antichrist” and gives you a strong first impression of what to expect on her debut album. The pair of singles expresses her emotional journey and I’m excited to hear the rest of the album.
