Outside Lands: Friday’s and Saturday’s best of the rest

SAN FRANCISCO —Outside Lands is about more than just the headliners, and this year is no exception. The lineup spans genres and ranges from young up-and-coming acts to pros. Here’s who else we loved on Friday and Saturday outside of Sabrina Carpenter, Grace Jones, The Killers, Kevin Abstract and Reneé Rapp.

Shaboozey performs during Outside Lands Music Festival in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco on Aug. 9, 2024.
Shaboozey: Few might be on a roll quite like Virginia singer-songwriter Shaboozey. His set felt a bit like a coronation of his viral hit “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” having breakout success. At the end of his performance, members of his team walked onstage and presented him with a plaque congratulating him on five straight weeks at No. 1. With a song so nice, why not play it twice? Shaboozey closed out his set playing the song twice in a row, encouraging the crowd to take the lead the second time through. His country-infused set was fun and laidback with tracks like “Horses & Hellcats” and “Tall Boy.”
K.Flay: A scorching set from the Stanford alum combined joy, energy and spontaneity. Kristine Flaherty, better known as K.Flay, rapped about her sudden deafness and the emotional reckoning it required. She offered her appreciation to the crowd, saying that San Francisco is the most beautiful city in the world and the place where her career started. She mixed in tracks from across her catalog. “Black Wave” hit with a particular punch. Now we just need her to move back to the Bay.

FLETCHER: The New Jersey delivered a diverse and fun set with some dynamic styling. The pop singer added a little more of a rock energy to her material, which translated well to the festival setting. A moody, ethereal cover of Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl” was a really fun and unexpected change of pace. FLETCHER kept the energy up on tracks like “Serial Heartbreaker.”

The Last Dinner Party performs during Outside Lands Music Festival in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco on Aug. 9, 2024.
The Last Dinner Party: There was a noticeable afternoon buzz for U.K. rock band The Last Dinner Party. The quintet expertly fused folky foundations with a rock sheen. Vocalist Abigail Morris brought charismatic charm to the performance that included songs like “Caesar on a TV Screen” and “Sinner.” The band is in the midst of a surge and the crowd reaction was a reflection of that momentum.
Knock2: The massive crowd that gathered for Knock2 on Friday at the Twin Peaks Stage was a bit of a surprise. For a midday electronic music set, it’s a bit unusual for an artist like Knock2 to have the attention of so many people in the palm of his hand. They were jumping, dancing, fist pumping and throwing hands up from front to back. The stage was equipped with pyrotechnics, which were use freely. He teased that some of his material would be coming on a forthcoming release later this year.

Young the Giant: One of the alt-rock bands on the festival bill, Young the Giant (yes, they’ve been around that long!) delivered the goods. The SoCal quintet veered from energetic anthems to hard–driving melodic rockers. The band drew evenly from its catalog, though it also covered Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” for good measure.
Weddings: The addition of “City Hall” seemed like a dicey proposition. How would weddings work at a massive music festival? Turns out, pretty well. The chosen spot was far enough from the stages to feel secluded, but close enough to feel like part of the action. The gardens were beautifully tended to by San Francisco Rec and Parks staff, and the setting was well executed. Weddings were performed in front of friends, but also allowed the opportunity for passersby to watch, which they seemed to do respectfully. One couple met at the festival 11 years ago, got engaged here and then got married. Storybook.

The food! Ninety-nine percent of the food vendors at Outside Lands are based in San Francisco. The food offerings are as diverse as the lineup. Lines weren’t too long on the first two days of the fest. Honorable mention goes to the Jamaican jerk bowl from Peaches Patties, which gave a swift kick, and the teeth-rattling, tear-inducing breakfast burrito hot sauce from Precita Park Cafe.
