This week we feature New York’s Sy Ari Da Kid and 22Gz, the solemn and soul-crushing sounds of Sueco and Slow Crush, and the hard rock antics of Otoboke Beaver and Dead Posey.

Sy Ari Da Kid featuring Jadakiss, “Unbreakable Promises” — We have a team-up of two NYC greats on this new joint produced by Vntg Jag. The instrumental features pitch-raised vocals over an acoustic guitar as Sy Ari reflects on his growing status, how dedication to the craft has netted him success, and the big names giving him respect. Jada chimes in as well, reflecting on his similar rise.

Slow Crush, “Blue” — This grungy garage number by Slow Crush will wash over you like letting the cold water run down your head in the shower after a bad day. The echoing and wailing guitars contrasted against the soft vocal delivery make for a deeply atmospheric and haunting listen. The lyrics depict a distant and crumbling relationship, leaving the narrator longing for the connection they once cherished with their lover.

Dead Posey, “Can’t Take Me Down” — Looking for something with a bit of the late ’70s, early ’80s hard rock to thrash to? Well, Dead Posey’s got you covered with this punchy, swinging number that’s perfect to give you a confidence boost when you most need it; complete with stomping kick drums, scratchy guitars and a kick-ass attitude. The confrontational lyrics (courtesy of Danyell Souza), remind me of the grit of AC/DC.

Otoboke Beaver, “PARDON?” — Japan has had many notable acts come from the hardcore and punk scene over the years, and I honestly think it’s extremely underrated with acts like The Stalin and GaGaGa SP. Otoboke Beaver captures the essence of early punk music from the ’70s with this thrash number that features repetitive lyrics to emphasize the meaninglessness of unwanted feedback that the band often finds itself receiving. Who doesn’t love to scream “SHUT UP!” in unison to those they can’t stand?

22Gz featuring Internet Money, “Loyalty” — The sustained strings into this drill number create for a spine-chilling buildup for Brooklyn rapper 22Gz to spit with vicious conviction. He’s out making a statement on this one that he’s a force to be reckoned with both on the mic and in the streets. The fearless energy 22Gz displays on this track, along with the infectious beat, will have you nodding along in time with his flow.

Sueco, “Today” — Sometimes it just feels impossible to take care of all of the things we have on our plate. Sueco is completely transparent with his anguish, opting for the easy release of drinking and doing drugs in order to cope with his apathy. He recognizes the destructiveness of his dependencies and how it creates this self-fulfilling cycle of negativity, belting over an acoustic guitar melody that grows into an electric guitar anthem of anguish.

Tim’s pick: Rapper 22Gz displays the kind of heat that one would come to expect from the drill scene. He glides over the instrumental and lays claim to being a formidable presence who’s breaking ground. It’s great to see new talent coming out of New York, the birthplace of hip-hop. The hunger in 22Gz’s eyes and his rhymes highlight how he’s primed to occupy minds for a long time.
