Tuesday Tracks: Your Weekly New Music Discovery – Aug. 17

Clockwise from top left: Cherry Glazerr, Deep Throat Choir, Crooked Teeth, Loyal Lobos, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, and Basement Revolver.
Whether you’re listening to coming-of-age dream-pop from Loyal Lobos, hypnotizing melodies from Cherry Glazerr or adrenaline-boosting riffs from Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, this week’s selections are a treat for the ears. We round out the best songs of the week with Basement Revolver, Crooked Teeth and Deep Throat Choir.
Cherry Glazerr, “Soft Drink” — Over the last year, Cherry Glazerr’s releases have introduced a made-over sound, tapping into synths and drum machines to deliver their distinct alt-rock attitude. “Rabbit Hole” and “Big Bang” are fiery and hypnotizing, while latest release “Soft Drink” is their moodiest yet. The new single is about yearning for someone, but at the same time keeps your guard up. Visions of dancing the night away and watching “Perfect Blue” together create an illusion of connection, especially with Clementine Creevy’s lush vocals over the hazy melody. The song is a dream sequence from start to finish.

Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes featuring Lynks, “Go Get A Tattoo” — The newest cut from Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes perfectly sums up lockdown restlessness. Whether you have an itch to get new ink or wreak havoc some other way, “Go Get A Tattoo” presents that chaotic energy via The Rattlesnakes’ electric-shock riffs and Frank Carter’s unruly vocals. The song’s bigger picture is an ode to Carter’s love for tattooing, best summed up by the lines, “It’s about time I tried something new/ To stick and poke out my commitment issues.”
Loyal Lobos, “Hate My Face” — Loyal Lobos’ catalog swells with emotion and with a slow burn. Singer-songwriter Andrea Silva’s confessional lyrics feel like secrets shared between close friends, often discussing fond memories or late-night thoughts. Her latest single, “Hate My Face,” does just the same, but with elements of shimmering ’90s pop mixed into her mellow soundscape. The retro callback adds a bittersweet tinge of nostalgia as Silva comes to terms with a friendship gone sour.

Basement Revolver, “Skin” — An intimate tell-all, the latest release by Basement Revolver is about learning to love the skin you’re in. The lyrics detail self-acceptance in progress, its highs and lows, while the quartet’s dream-pop sound brings out a sense of safety. The song’s swirling guitars paired with Chrisy Hurn’s gauzy vocals come through with delicate grace—a gentle reminder to be kind to yourself.
Crooked Teeth, “Hallelujah (Wish I Never Knew Ya)” — You don’t need to be a longtime listener to recognize that Tyson Evans of Crooked Teeth can write a solid hook. His recent track, “Hallelujah (Wish I Never Knew Ya),” kicks off with a feel-good riff that instantly pulls you in. It goes on to mix rugged and moody verses with an explosion of a chorus, piling on quippy one-liners and undeniable pop-punk tendencies. A modern alt-pop anthem, the song offers a catchy catharsis with lyrics that revel in letting go of toxic relationships.

Deep Throat Choir, “Alchemilla” — “Alchemilla,” the opening track to Deep Throat Choir’s forthcoming album, strikingly blends elements of choral music, folk and soul. Powered predominantly by the collective’s voices, the single creates an entrancing atmosphere through polyrhythmic chants and lush vocalizations. Its sound goes hand in hand with the song’s allusions to mysticism and transformation, highlighting poignant lyrics like “Vulnerability’s power/ It lets me open like a flower.”
Chloe’s Pick: I’m loving this shift in sound from Loyal Lobos. The ’90s dream-pop influence makes “Hate My Face” feel cinematic, capturing the reflective slice of life snapshot depicted in Silva’s lyrics. Life isn’t always like a movie, but this song sure offers a sense of reprieve.
